Report:TUNBRIDGE DELIGHT FOR BCC BOYS

A strong second half to the season was enough to see BCC retain their status in the top echelons of Kent Priory Squash for another season.
Some pundits in the media put the return to form down to El Capitano’s excellent motivational skills; others said it was due to the fact that Kimpton was struck down with an illness – which galvanised the team in his absence. James claimed it was all down to him.

Going into the match BCC needed a minimum of 6pts, no wait 7pts from this encounter to ensure safety, whilst Tunbridge needed a win themselves, just in case there was a mathematical miracle down at Langley Towers.

The journey down to Tunbridge was delayed slightly as Sam (aka Ted Jeal the 2nd) thought he recognised the area, and then promptly directed us in the wrong direction. – ‘Well I knew you had to go down a hill to get there!’ he said. There’s more than 1 hill in Tunbridge Sam!
When we did arrive we were greeted by a throng of players and fans all hoping to see Tunbridge stay up - (at the expense of Park Langley 2).

Tim Richards vs Lewy (No.1)

Tim took his pre-match warm up seriously with s series of court sprints and strange stretching manoeuvres. Lewis has never stretched in his life, so was completely bewildered by this new tactic. – The first two games went to form in front of a knowledgeable if not excitable crowd as Tim controlled the pace and had Lewy continuously chasing the game. Into the 3rd and after some words of wisdom from James, (yeah he’s the complete package isn’t he?) Lewy began to ruffle Tim. Some great boasts and tight lengths gave Lewy an early lead which he managed to hold onto and win the game. (6pts or 5pts to go!) – Tim stormed back in the 4th and resumed normal service. The effort to win the 3rd clearly affected Lewis’ fitness and Tim ran out a 3-1 winner.

Matt Vs Sam (No.2)

I have not seen Matt play before but he was far too strong for Sam, who looked jaded in the early stages of this match. Matts’ strong wrists and deft flicks had Sam looking for directions as he went down 2-0 in quick fashion.
James found time in between straightening his hair to give Sam some pearls of wisdom, and again it did the trick as Sam got back into the match, (5pts or 4pts to go!) It wasn’t enough though and Matt ran onto win 3-1.

John Vs El Capitano (No.5)

Knowing that BCC were so close to the magic target, El Capitano had his game face and brain on – or so he thought.
An early blister in the warm up hindered his grip and he had to resort to keeping it on his backhand. The first was straightforward, but John ran into a 6-2 lead in the 2nd. El Capitano fought back though and took the 2nd before running onto win 3-0 comfortably. (2pts or 1 to go!)

James vs James (No.3)

I was on during this match so missed it all. James did tell me though that he thought the marking was bad, and he was getting equally frustrated with James continually barging into his rather large frame. At 1pt in the third, he screamed at James ‘If you run into me one more time – (I’ll introduce you to the gun show)’ the part in brackets was more for effect – but it’s the sort of thing he would say. All close games but James (thin one) ran out 3-0.

Street vs Richard (No.4)

Richard has recently been diagnosed with a rare lung disease, which means that his lungs are at 20% capacity. Hence he is more unfit than usual and can only last a couple of points at time, before having a near seizure on court. Street was therefore the last person he would have wanted to play.
Strange match with both players making plenty of mistakes and playing plenty of unorthodox shots. Kimpton went 1-0 up and then 2-1 down, he was then told that he needed to win the next 2 to ensure our survival. This he promptly did despite looking like he would pass out at any moment.

With the match ending 3-2 and 16 – 8 in favour of Tunbridge Wells, both clubs had ensured survival. The meal was washed down with a glass of celebratory Champagne, whilst there was plenty of banter thrown around the table about Sams’ striking similarity to Ted Jeal, and about James’s bad altitude, I mean attitude on court.

We all agreed however that Dulwich’s’ remarkable unbeaten season should see them nominated for Kent Squash team of the year, whilst Tim Garner should receive an MBE for services to Kent Priory.
