Report: | Mark had more prime cuts than tins this week. Well done Mark, especially for beating Steve, the almost conqueror of the disqualified Andrew Bonner last week.
Chris S-B a good win ground out against a tricky and surprisingly hard-hitting older Bruce. Bruce received much advice to vary his game, and kindly passed some of it on to the Knole captain marking. But since Chris chased down any thing, it didn’t matter where Bruce put it for much of the time. Two drop shots from Chris this week. Just as well there weren’t more, otherwise the element of surprise would have been lost in their poor quality. Never mind; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Tom showed glimpses of last season’s sharpness as he went 2-0 up against the youthful Alistair. Alistair remembers when Knole had no heating on court, so he can’t be that young. However, his length game apparently came back to him in time to recover and take the rubber.
Jerry found Stuart – fresh from Priory ‘A’ tournament combat – a bit of a handful. He made a late surge to 6-6 in the third, but a clinical Stuart closed out with only a slight hiccough. He will be hard to beat at 2nd string; and Jerry will find wins hard to come by. It’s all good experience for the lad, though, with his newly-acquired coaching qualification under his belt. Maybe a case of ‘physician heal thyself’?
That left Chris Sayer and Dartford’s new star Nick Peel to battle out the decider. Nick was a new face for Knole but we should have expected a clever seasoned campaigner, given his track record. Nick took a couple of games to work Chris out. The first two were 1 apiece, but it could have been 2-0 either way. However, they took more out of Chris than Nick, and with Chris’s ribs still hurting from his Go-Carting mishap last time out, he found smashing Nick’s lobs a wearing task and duly succumbed to his injuries.
Dartford sail on and Knole sink a bit lower. They did double their season’s points tally, though. And so there is light beckoning. We hope!
Dartford were late for the 7.30 start, so supper and drinking had to be rushed. A lesson for all Knole visitors to add to the list.
