Report: | Sundridge Park trotted out their new look Summer Div. 1 side; but missing 1 & 2 away on guitar and bike – also 6, 7 & 8. And no 5th string. Good news for Knole, as they started 1-0 up.
Unfortunately for KP, the good news ended there. Apart from canny old Justin – bad back and dodgy strings – all the others were fit and keen young bloods. More than a match for the KP geriatric brigade.
While Captain John busied himself trying to track down the missing Priory Trophies from 5 years back, Chris Sayer & Justin sallied forth. Faced with an awesome array of local knowledge, cold walls and dusty floors, Chris found that he had to curse himself hard just to get to 0-2 down. Thereafter, normal service was almost resumed, interrupted only when Chris stopped in mid shot having been disturbed by a tirade of self-abuse from the adjacent court. A disputed let was allowed, even after the expletive stream was found to have emanated from a KP player. Chris managed to chase down the last few balls and luckily edge the rubber 3-2.
Meanwhile Jerry had been soundly McMurdered by Bill. And Mark was cursing his way to an ear-shattering drubbing from Andy. So it was 2-2 by the time the 1st string marathon had finished.
Against the run of ages, Chris Morgan seemed to have a chance of taking the deciding rubber. At 1-0 and 8-6 eveything was under control. Then Jerome’s youth, Jonah Barrington coaching shirt and silkier skills switched up a gear. Helped by coach Justin reminding him how good he was, Jerome rattled off 22 out of 23 points to give Sparks a short-handed win.
Apparently the missing trophies were photographed on the wall a couple of years ago, but since then reported missing by P.C. and insurance claims made. Sparks claim they were mislaid in good faith, while on a canoe trip.
