Report: | Having given up the valiant struggle against back-to-back relegation, Knole were relaxed about their trip into the wilds of Outer North West Kent.
John and Mark had an odd match at 5. John edging the first and third 10-8 each. Mark winning the 2nd and 4th easily with his trademark cut drops and drives. Boosted by a couple of lucky mishits and with a lot of fist-pumping and yelling, John proved the more determined, although Mark had clear leads in all of the first four games.
Ash was in the middle of a course of physiotherapy for his back, which continued during the extended 3 minute intervals between games. He also benefited from home court advantage, especially with Cascades having installed a new feature in the front wall of their show court. It’s a small arch-shaped hole just above the tin. When the ball hits the top of the arch it drops like a stone – dead on the floor. Looks down – but isn’t. Marker correctly called a let – as they don’t have planning permission for the arch. Players too stunned to argue.
Ball so lively, that clearing difficult and double bounces hard to be sure about. Having waited for a couple of games for players to own up to their own doubles, marker decides to call them himself. After a few, marker warned not to get involved. ‘Just mark the game!’ That told him!
Once that was sorted out, the thrashabout continued peacefully, with Ash marginally the better thrasher. I think his back was better by the end, too.
Tom did well to pull a large deficit back in the first against Hany to take it 10-8. But the effort may have taken more out of him than his opponent. Hany eased away to a 3-1 win with some nice touch and faster legs.
Craig seems a lot happier playing at 2. Not getting duffed up so often, presumably. Disposed of Jerry double quick.
And Keith seems a lot happier at 1 – showing why with some sharp shotting and getting. He gave Chris a fright at 2-0 and 6-3 up. Angered by some more close calls, Chris seemed to gain strength and determination, although the final game could have gone either way.
