Report: | Bottom two slugging it out like title contenders.
Division 2's answer to the Sly Fox - Syd Sly - had cleverly arranged his order so that he could reprise his famous role as 3rd string sacrificial lamb. This was to prove decisive later on as the retirements unfolded.
Both teams missing their number 1s made it a more interesting contest and allowed us to see some unfamiliar names and faces.
First up Tom and Terry - who have met before. Nothing had changed as they both exploited a quiet marker and their full range of gamesmanship. What a pity a firmer hand was not applied before the argy-bargy and toy-kicking began. In the end, the correct result was achieved, although Tom had kicked his racket so far that he couldn't find it for the last point. We hope that his family and friend supporting were suitably impressed.
Chris S-B blasted the lamb off court in 3, in spite of suffering from 'flu'.
Then Mark showed us why he is such an enigma. Playing Andy on his first foray back from injury, Mark conceded the first with nine 'welcome back' errors. Then Andy returned the favour - twice. The decibel count rose in the fourth and fifth - we missed you Andy - as Andy clawed and growled his way back into the match. At 5-4 in the decider, the loudest scream was heard - from Mark this time - as his dodgy knee and hamstring both gave way together.
2-1 to Syd's crew. A much firmer marker took the two gentlemen at 5th string on. An evenly matched contest between two relative gentlemen resulted in the new boy Bob taking the tie for the visitors. Predictable, really, as his West Ham shirt gave him an edge with the Hammers' fan marking;-)
In the dead rubber, Jerry did well to stick with the talented John Hogwood, as the two stand-in no.1s filled in more than adequately for the missing stars. Jerry's weight advantage - or lack of it - proved the deciding factor in the end.
See you next year in Div. 3 Syd.
