Report: | Veteran Justin brought a crop of young hopefuls to Knole for a match with little meaning; both teams being secure in their league positions (Knole for the drop; Sparks for 4th).
Ollie, recovering from leg ligament damage, had just enough lack of pace to allow John 7 points, including a very close last rally that could have gone either way if it had been one shot shorter.
They were finished in time to watch all of the other matches bar half of one game between Chris (2) and Billy. The Knole dervish delivered a valuable point before Billy got into his stride to sweep the next three comfortably.
Justinough Justin showed why he is such a canny veteran, wasting as little effort and energy as possible in overcoming Jerry, even with a complete rest in the second game.
Andy allowed Chris (3) the luxury of a close third game, before the 20 year age difference bagan to tell. Maybe the thought of a lung-busting fourth persuaded Chris to ease off the pedal at 9-9.
Finally, Chris (1), still weak from a mystery ailment, found Kevin trimmer and more focussed than erstwhile. Losing the first before he was into his stride and a narrow second, Chris found that 110% effort from his aching body was only enough to pull one game back and he had no strength left for the fourth.
So a whitewash for Sparks, which will have given them every confidence against the next 3rd Division bound team that they meet.
Both teams were obviously on their best behaviour, to ensure plenty of support for themselves in the Priory Players of the Season competition. Voting started early, as Knole were polished off well before closing time. Over supper there was much talk of the thrills awaiting Sundridge in the Summer, when they will be entertaining the elite clubs of Division 1. Kevin was particularly keen to show off his stuff to any touring pros. We wish them well.
