Report

Report:The Cobon boys finally got the show on the road against last years fellow promotion rivals Dulwich. Following 2 closely contested matches last season this one promised to be no different. The only disappointment was the sad news of last seasons Dulwich captain, Simon having serious knee ligament problems.

The pressure was on the Cobon Boys due to the much-heralded return of the ‘Cobdown Cabbage’ shirt, awarded to the worst performer on the night and to be worn the following week.

First match up saw BB take on Ravi on a court with one or two potholes on the front wall (soon to be repaired). BB looking a little rusty following his extended break from the game due to several holidays took the first game with some impressive shots. However this proved to be a flash in the pan as Ravi found his game. I think the additional pounds Graham seems to be carrying made him a little wider than normal as Ravi seemed to have a problem with running into him. Graham had no answer with Ravi running out a comfortable 3-1 winner. This performance by BB will see him wearing the ‘Cabbage’ shirt next week.

Woolley fresh from an internal box match 30 minutes earlier took on a lean and mean looking Olly. The different styles were evident from the off as Ollies’ more controlled squash got the better of Woolleys erratic opening taking the 1st 9/6. There certainly seemed to be some competition for who could hit the ball the hardest. Woolleys game didn’t improve much in the 2nd & 3rd whereas Ollies did and he controlled the match to run out a convincing 3-0 winner.

Cobdown 2-0 down and looking in serious trouble

Cagey against Rhys was another interesting encounter with Rhys demonstrating the more stylish range of shots. Unfortunately for Rhys he couldn’t string them together enough times to beat Cagey. Plenty of long closely fought rallies with many good shots to win the point. There were equally plenty of rallies, which were concluded with some dreadful errors! Rhys did well to contain his frustration when it looked like his racket was in danger of bearing the brunt of it. 3 tight games with Cagey trying his best to give away the 3rd, winning 3-0

The match up between DJ on the other court with JPW was decisive with the outcome being 3-1 Dulwich or 2-2. Some excellent squash was being played by the two no 5’s and no one could question the commitment being shown. The 1st was a close one with DJ throwing away his slight advantage for JPW to take it. DJ came back strong in the 2nd to win it convincingly before JPW did the same in the 3rd. With the pressure on DJ showed some real grit to take a close 4th. Fitness was the key and JPW was never in any real danger of losing the 5th. DJ may have problems with his Fandango after this long encounter!

No 1’s FYB and Ed went on whilst the No 5’s were on court with neither knowing what the outcome would be. The 1st rally was a long tiring one with both players covering all of the court well. A close 1st was edged by FYB with his range of shots proving key in the 9/6 scoreline. The 2nd pretty much followed the same pattern with Ed getting the upper hand early on only for FYB to claw it back. Shouts of make him run from the Dulwich players seemed to encourage Ed but FYB, ‘stung’ by the Bumble Bee comments from last year, was in no mood to let that happen winning the 2nd 9/6. The 3rd saw FYB in control and winning 3-0

3-2 to Dulwich and a fine match played in a great spirit was finished off with some good humour and several beers and food in the bar. In fact we nearly convinced JPW that because it was 9-9 in games we should share the 5 points!

Promises to be a great season ahead for both teams
