Report

Report:Looks like closely contested matches are going to be the norm for the Cobon Boys this season after another 3-2 victory, when it looked like a defeat was on the cards. This was Bexley’s 1st defeat of the season, which saw them retain top spot but only until the outcome of the match between the other 2 unbeaten teams.

First match up saw a very elderly looking DJ giving 44 years away to his much younger opponent. Interesting to see how DJ coped with this and whether he could forget he coaches youngsters of this age every Saturday. DJ took a 2-0 lead as a result of Elliot’s inconsistent play which was obviously frustrating him as DJ was giving him every opportunity to play his shots. The 3rd saw Elliot display some wonderful front court shots which DJ could only stand and admire as the youngster deservedly took the 3rd. The 4th followed the same pattern with Elliot opening up a lead before the nervousness returned which saw DJ claw back and take the 4th for a 4-1 win. Can’t help thinking that if Elliot had held his nerve in the 4th then he would have won this match. Definitely a youngster to watch for the future.

Cagey was the proud wearer of the Cabbage shirt this week along with a very suspicious knee support. Cagey was keen to let everyone know his knee was hurting and he really shouldn’t be playing, what a martyr! This was a very one-sided affair with Kevin unexpectedly taking the 3rd before going down 3-1 to Gary, but the team were proud of him. Not too much else to say about this one other than Gary did well not to let his opponents injury deflect him from winning. Any chance you can drive next week if you aren’t fit cagey?

BB, throwing off the ‘Cabbage’ label turned in his best performance, in my opinion, of the season against Lee. Lee, fresh from his Div 1 outing the previous night, was much sharper around the court which told in what would seem on the face of it to be a one-sided 3-0 score line. The games scores don’t do BB justice, as there were many long rallies with a wide variety of shots and some excellent squash. Unfortunately for BB Lee retrieved just about everything and edged most rallies with points being hard won with good squash rather than lost with poor shots. Well played Lee, bad luck BB, any other week would have seen a win. It seems rather harsh but a 3-0 defeat will see BB back in the ‘Cabbage’ shirt next week.

On the other court Woolley looking lean, mean and somewhat scary was up against a tough opponent in Nanu. Woolleys erratic play, interspersed with some good shots, was poles apart from the deceptive shots and clever play of Nanu. However, Woolley is renowned for his fitness and likeness to a Tasmanian Devil on court, never letting his opponent have it easy. Nanu edged the 1st with a closer score than his play credited. The 2nd went the way of Woolley with the 3rd going to Nanu in exactly the same way with some uncharacteristic and somewhat nervous drop shots from his opponent. Fitness was to play a part from here on in with the Tasmanian Devil racing round court, retrieving everything, pushing his opponent around the court and then dropping the ball with his opponent looking on from the back. 2-2 and Woolley needing to win the 5th to tie the match at 2-2. This he duly did, as Nanu had no legs or spirit left to put up a fight.

The two Alan’s went on court knowing they decided the fate of the match. FYB set off like a steam train; speeding into an 8-0 lead before Alan decided he ought top play a shot rather than admire his opponents athleticism and superb array of shots (I write it so I can say what I want!). A 9-1 score suggested this was going to be easy for FYB, not the case! Alan staged a fight back in the 2nd getting into gear and himself playing some good stuff to take a commanding lead. FYB fought back in his characteristic style but Alan held his nerve and rounded out a close 2nd. Alan took an early lead in the 3rd before FYB got back on track and dictated the play, taking the 3rd and 4th reasonably comfortably.

An excellent match with great support from the appreciative Bexley crowd, including an appearance by some of the P.C. committee.

Great company, great food, good beer, oh, and the squash wasn’t too bad either! Looking forward to the return already.
