Report

Report:Due to a number of absentees Cobdown took on a different look for this match with the high flyers of Waterfront. On the face of it this still looked a strong Cobown line-up but it wasn’t to be against a strong Waterfront team in what proved to be another close contest.

Young Tim wearing shorts that can only be described as very big and loud stormed the 1st 9/0 against a bewildered John. Tim very quickly went 8-0 up in the second and we were all thinking ‘could he do a 27-0’. At this point things were looking good for Cobdown as Steve had taken an early lead on the other court. Alas it wasn’t to be be! John found something from somewhere and retrieved everything and gradually took control coming back to take the 2nd 10/8. From looking like an also ran, the boot was now on the other foot and John dictated the match with sensible squash and good retrieving, along with a fair amount of effort. Tim wasn’t up to the challenge but still turned in a very creditable performance.

Steve from being 1-0 up soon found himself embroiled in a tough match against an experienced Paul. Paul seemed to be on the back foot in many of the rallies but his very clever use of shots continually wrong footed his opponent and his anticipation on many occasions found him in the right place to play the killer shot. This saw John take the next 2 before Steve found some reserves and gamely took a very edgy 4th with John not quite on the pace. However Steve’s joy was short lived and from an early lead in the 5th he lost out to a better player on the night with John taking the rest of the points for a well deserved victory.

Andy v Simon was a bit of a strange affair with the match swinging one way then the other with both players trying to hit the ball too hard. Simon took the 1st very easily with Andys game looking a bit ragged. The same pattern emerged in the 2nd with Simon now looking ragged and Andy taking a 7-0 lead. The roles changed again and Andy let Simon back in with some poor play before finally taking the 2nd. Andy took the 3rd relatively easily with some improved play and the odd drop shot. Simon fought back well to take the 4th with his game improving. The 5th was a tense affair with Andy always seeming to have the upper hand and at 8-6 up he had the chance to seal the win but poor shot selection saw the chance disappear. Simon held his nerve just a little better and came back to 8-8. Andy again had the chance to take the win at 9-8 up but Simon refused to be beaten, eventually running out the winner 10-9 in the 5th.

Didn’t see much of Slim v Manjit due to marking Andys match but by all accounts Manjit was a deserved winner taking the 1st, 3rd & 4th games with some impressive squash. Slim put up a brave fight winning the 2nd playing some excellent squash of his own. Slim seemed to think that he wasn’t having much luck on the night but the scoreline suggests this wasn’t the case.

Last up FYB & Dave with Waterfront 4-0 up on the night. After reminiscing for a little while about squash 'up north' the match finally got under way. The first saw FYB continually move Dave around the court until an opening appeared which FYB exploited to the full taking the game 9-1. The second went pretty much the same way with FYB racing into an early lead before Dave got his game together and fought his way back with some superb back hand drops. Dave maintained the pressure and took the 2nd 10-8 with some excellent squash, which was keeping the crowd entertained. Losing the 2nd motivated FYB into action and again he stormed into an early 7-0 lead in the 3rd with some wonderful serves, drops & lobs leaving Dave wondering what he could do. Again he fought back but FYB was in no mood to let this one slip away and finished off the 3rd in style. The 4th was pretty much a replay of the 3rd and FYB had his victory. Both players and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed this match and the high standard of squash played.

Both teams should be complemented on their attitude and sportsmanship in this match and after match beers and food saw lots of banter between the teams and another excellent evening finished off the way it should be.
