Report: | Another strong looking Cobdown team took the short journey over to Wildernesse, hoping to resurrect their season after recent disappointing results. Unfortunately they found a Wilderness team in no mood to roll over and in reality this wasn’t as close a contest as the final result might suggest.
FYB went on first for a change with his unbeaten record looking in jeopardy against another previously unbeaten No 1. FYB overcame the concerns about cold, dark courts to take the 1st game with not too many long rallies. Short rallies were the order of the day and FYB proved to have the edge over his younger opponent and took a close 2nd 10-8 with good squash being played by both players. Rich came back in the 3rd to give FYB a taste of his own medicine, taking the ball early, dropping and boasting to take full advantage of the ‘dead’ court. FYB regained his composure and took the 4th relatively easily to maintain his unbeaten record.
On the other court Ian very quickly dispatched DJ to a 3-0 defeat. DJ was unable to cope with the short rallies and found that trying to rally and push your opponent deep won’t work if your opponent is waiting to pick off the shots, which Ian did with some ease. Completely the wrong kind of game for DJ but nevertheless Ian still had to win it.
A debut for Pete against Mark was a mirror image of the Ian v DJ with Pete wanting to rally and drive the ball, Mark dropping and boasting everything to the front. Pete was getting more and more frustrated as Mark was picking off the shots with ease and not rallying at all. Pete came back a little in the 3rd but Mark maintained his ruthless game to win convincingly 3-0.
Slim v Chris was another one-sided affair although not for the same reasons. Slim didn’t produce his normal tight driving squash which enabled Chris to take full advantage and control the game from the middle of the court. Some excellent retrieving and ‘gets’ from Chris produced many winning shots with Slim not on the pace. Another disappointing 3-0 loss with Chris playing very well for a deserved victory.
Woolly v Harvey produced some excellent squash, which made earlier moans about the court look a little lame. Harvey took an enthralling 1st with some excellent rallies being finished with some excellent shots. Woolly very quickly got the upper hand in the 2nd and his powerful style, reaction time and speed around the court proved a bit too much for the more experienced Harvey. The 3rd went to Woolly in exactly the same way. The 4th saw Harvey get back into the match with some excellent, long and tiring rallies going his way but it wasn’t enough to deny Woolly his victory. Great game played in a great spirit.
And so off to the pub for Cobdown to lick their wounds and Wildernesse to glory in their victory. FYB was in his element with a very nice pint (or three) of Youngs to wash down the Chilli and sandwiches. Great company once again and excellent hospitality!
