Report

Report:After an unexpected cup triumph last week Cobdown got their season back on track with another close victory over Sundridge Park. A welcome visit by BB boosted the gallery and we look forward to having him back in the New Year after his prolonged absence through illness.

A late start saw DJ up against a much younger opponent (again!) in Richie. Experience seemed to be winning the day as DJ played some of his best squash of the season so far to take a 2-0 lead. Grinding his opponent down with his steady play and conservative use of drop shots he took an 8-5 lead in the 3rd to have match ball and then the wheels came off! He lost the 3rd 10-8 as Richie upped his game and started playing the better squash. Richie edged a very close 4th before he took the 5th comfortably. A cracking game which both players can be proud of.

Slim against Richard was a real ‘Blood & Guts’ affair without the Blood and the Guts! After 2 games of ‘who can hit the ball hardest’ during which both players played some fine shots, Richard had a 2-0 lead. Very little in the way of drop shots in the previous games made way for a very different 3rd with Slim using his head to wrong foot his opponent with clever use of boasts and taking it 9-0. Richard fought back in the 4th to knock Slim out of his stride and looked like he was going to take the it, before Slim conjured up some reserves and a few lucky shots to take a close 4th. Slim never looked in danger in the 5th and took the match 3-2. Another excellent match.

Didn’t see much of Cagey against Andy but after Cagey won the 1st by surprising his opponent with his range of shots and style of play. Andy seemed to get to grips with Gagey and played a varying range of shots himself to win the next 2 games comfortably. Cagey by this time was feeling worse for wear after his extended lay off through injury but gamely fought on in the 4th to take a lead before Andy clawed it back to take a 3-1 win.

Phil against Garth went on at a time when Phil is normally drinking his hot chocolate. This late start seemed to affect both players as neither seemed to want to rally the ball too much and many mistakes were made. However the pace picked up and Phil edged a very well contested 1st 10-9. The 2nd went the way of Garth who liked to play drops and boasts at every opportunity, which was probably something to do with him being knackered! Phil then took control of this match playing some excellent drops and boasts of his own, mixed in with the odd lob. This took the steam out of Garth and Phil had a comfortable 3-1 in the bag.

FYB vs David was last up at an ungodly hour and with supper waiting and the beer getting warm FYB was in no mood to let this one go on any longer than necessary. With David not getting into his stride and making too many mistakes FYB wasted no time in taking the first 2 games dropping just 1 point. The range of shots and clever disguise kept David guessing well into the 3rd but he managed to get a brief foothold in the game to take 3 points with some nice shots. Comfortable win for FYB with David not really enjoying the experience.

Belatedly off to the bar for some excellent beer and food but unfortunately the late hour meant we couldn’t have too much of the beer!.

DJ felt hard done by when told he was being awarded the Cabbage shirt, but everyone felt that to lose from being 2-0 and 8-5 up was unforgivable!
