Report: | The New Year re-start saw the in-form Biggin Hill team looking to take maximum points from this double header, with Cobdown looking to secure a mid-table position. This match proved to be another very close contest with little to choose between the two teams.
Slim v Simon was a bit of a yo-yo of a match with both players striking the ball hard and clean but errors generally dictated the outcome of each game. Many long hard fought rallies forced first Slim then Simon into trying to win points by playing the wrong shot at the wrong time. Despite this there were many fine shots from both players and at 2-2 it was there for both to win. Slim having taken the 4th to love looked favorite but found Simon in no mood to let this go easily. Slim had lady luck on his side for a change and a few dead nicks saw him edge out in front and finally take the 5th.
DJ looked to be up against it from the start with him suitably attired in the cabbage shirt. Dean always had the edge in this match and the game scores were a credit to DJ’s ability to stay in the rallies and never give up. DJ made full use of Deans frequent mistakes to take points, which put Dean under pressure. He dealt well with the pressure though and produced some excellent shots when needed, to win the first two games. DJ to be fair was playing a better player and he did well to maintain the pressure on Dean by not giving him too many easy points and he got his just rewards by taking the 3rd game. Dean however turned up the gas in the 4th to take it relatively easily.
Match at 1-1 and finely balanced.
Woolley v Anthony was an interesting match with Anthony looking every bit like he had the fitness and skill to win this one easily. However, nobody gets an easy win against Woolley and the 1st game saw Anthony getting a little frustrated at the pace of the ball, continual retrieving and positions he found himself in trying to play the ball. Both players with excellent shots often finished some great rallies and Anthony in particular seemed to like the volley drop nicks to both front corners of the court. A tough 1st went to Anthony and was quickly followed by an assured display to take the 2nd. However the 3rd saw the game turn in Woolleys favor when he tightened up his game and mixed it up a little to take Anthony around the court allowing him to play his very delicate drops shots to the front. A very close 3rd followed by a very close 4th went to Woolley to tie the rubber up at 2-2. Unfortunately for Woolley the effort in winning the previous two games seemed to take their toll midway through the final game when it was evenly poised. Anthony playing relentless line and length kept the ball going which forced Woolley into playing a few desperate shots to try and win points. It was a fine line between a great shot and clipping the top of the tin and fortunately for Anthony the tin was on his side winning 3-2
Didn’t see much of Cagey against Nick but on first glance it looked as though Nick had the beating of Cagey. However with the pressure on to get as many points as possible and on at the same time as Woolley it was vital to win this rubber. Cagey held his nerve to take a very close 1st game 9-8 taking full advantage of Nick’s careless mistakes. However Nick got his act together and won the next 2 games rather comfortably playing fine shots along the way. However cagey got back into it in the 4th and with Nick playing on with a broken racket edged the 4th to level it up at 2-2. With BH 2-1 the 5th game was crucial as it proved to be the decider in determining who took the extra 10 points for winning. Cagey went into an early lead and the signs were looking good for Cobdown until Nick upped his game to take a run of points to win 9-6.
3-1 to Biggin Hill and essentially the No 1 match was a dead rubber in some people’s eyes. However with double points up for grabs there was everything to play for. Unfortunately Stuart never really got going in this one and FYB took full advantage by pushing the ball around the court and finishing the rallies quickly. A comfortable 3-0 for FYB with Stuart a little upset at not giving him a better game.
The match finished at 11 games each with Biggin Hill taking the match 3-2 and it has to be said that all the rubbers were played in a great spirit despite the closeness.
An appearance by the P.C. was most welcome and they joined both teams in sampling the fine beer on offer in the bar.
The Cobdown Cabbage shirt for the week is awarded to Cagey for nearly crapping himself when told at 2-2 he needed to win the 5th or we had lost the match!
