Report

Report:Beer and pies, that is what team squash is all about. The 3rds have had some rather pleasant culinary experiences, especially at the cultured hands of our captain and celebrity chef in waiting, J-P. The sausages and mash after our first home game will take some beating.
After last week's defeat due to a weakened team following illness, injury, a skiing holiday and a holiday in Barbados the 3rds were determined to organise themselves better this week. Cue match day and the realisation that Jake was not playing. That message had somehow got lost in translation. Step up J-P, injured and having not purportedly played for about a month. So, no pressure then. He won, 3-0, against an opponent who he beat 3-2 when fully fit.
Despite the effects of the Christmas break, that was to be the general trend of this match. Rhys playing with flair, (otherwise called dicing with death, especially on his service)overcame Kevin 3-1, to whom he had lost 0-3 when we beat Cobdown in the first half of the season. No more reverse angles should be his new year resolution, even more so when game ball down. Though he did get his serve back and went on to win that game.
Ed Knox, on a skiing holiday last week and playing at number 2 to accommodate a rotation policy that makes Rafa Benitez selection look straightforward was far too strong for his opponent. But Ed was perhaps grateful for not having to face Alan Briscoe who I understand is undefeated at number 1 for Cobdown and a respected consumer of ale and pies (I have used the plural advisedly).
I had a rematch with the same opponent I played in our away match beating him 3-0, though that does not reflect accurately the balance of the match. So we had won the match and were 4-0 up with only the number 1's to play.
Alan versus Andrew Dawes( I am told that he is a second team stalwart, yes, the same 2nd team who are reluctant to play us in a friendly match) was the last game. Andrew who won last week finished his second match with the 3rd's with a fifty percent record, he lost 0-3. However it was a gallant effort against Alan whose superior drop volleying won him the match. Had Andrew managed to win the second game then the common consensus was that he may have gone on to take the match.
However, normal service has resumed and with a bit of luck in avoiding injury and illness it should continue.
Back to the rather more important matter of food and drink. Perhaps we can have a stew for the next home match - beef anyone?
