Report

Report:Following last weeks plucky win away at Tunbridge Wells squash supremo Ben Newark didn't rest on his laurels. As Freud said - and I think he had our Bambi in mind - a man thinks of sending a text every other minute and in Ben's case the "other" minute is spent thinking about his squash team.

On Saturday evening he was at the club running the rule over three of his charges: AC, Trigger and Golden Bars were all on view. Inspired by Ben's tips on squash and the right diet for athletes, the boys retired to the SPARKS bar for further team talks with GB's sultry senorita where the conversation moved on apace from squash to volleyball and back again.

Ben had so much knowledge to impart that the happy group moved on to club sponsors Raj Moni, although GB and SS declined the invitation, rather sheepishly I thought, saying they had something else to do as they walked off, hand-in-hand......

So to Tuesday night at a packed Sundridge Bar. Would Bambi's words of wisdom plus much Guinness and Curry have the desired effect?

You bet they did! A thumping 4-1 (19-5) win over those very nice blokes from the middle of nowhere. In the words of the Wildernesse stalwart Captain Bob, it was a "stuffing"!

First out of the traps, AC and Trigger. AC put in a solid performance (which was more than he managed post training camp on Sunday morning) to win 3-0. Meanwhile on the Richard Jones court Trigger played brilliant squash to run an exceptionally good (and young) player close, going down 3-2. A tremendous effort to take 2 two games from his opponent.

A good start but the evening was not without some early off-court drama. Pascal, the Gallic rascal, called in very late to drop out. (You're not kidding - it was nearly 8pm for goodness sake, Ed.) Disaster! Sacre Bleu! But this team is made of sterner stuff, and a squash supremo like our Bambi inspires loyalty. No-one other than Garth, the feisty man of the veldt, honourary Englishman and all-round good egg, answered the call (and texts) and stepped in to play a blinder. A cracking 3-1 win and its SPARKS 2 - 1 Wildernesse.

Next on court Boothy and Golden Bars. Boothy won comfortably 3-0, putting in an impressive spurt in the 3rd game to come back from 8-2 to win it 10-8. (Mrs Sarah Booth declined to be interviewed this week - Ed.). Meanwhile Golden Bars was on court 2 playing superbly. Not only did he have new strings (special thanks to George "Not so" Wise) in his bat but he appeared to have acquired a new forehand as well. He battered his opponent into submission with his new found power and width. ("Scorchio!" cried the sultry senorita with every winning drive, and there were lots of 'em).

A night to remember, not least for the superb Steak pie, chips and beans laid on by Fat Chef afterwards, although the unavailability of genuine HP sauce was noted by the northerners from both teams.

Player of the week? A difficult decision. For once, everyone was a contender. Forget the fact he lost, Dave played brilliantly against a really good opponent, and contributed a useful 2 points . GB played as well as your correspondent has seen him play, but may be it was the strings? AC and Boothy both put in good performances to win 3-0. But this weeks player of the week has to be Garth. To turn up when the call came very late in day, and then win so convincingly, was a great effort for the team so P-o-W goes to Garth. Well done.
