Report: | Cobdown were in fine form to record their first 5-0 victory and against another mid table team. This result looks to have killed off any hopes BLTC had of winning promotion whilst at the same time staving off any fears of relegation for the ‘Cobon’ boys.
First up Cagey v Kelvin – didn’t see any of this match due to being on the other court but judging by what cagey told me he played that well he was worthy of a place in the County squad! Correct, full of bullsh*t but apparently he played ok and despite the exchange of games in the first 2 he eventually ran out a comfortable 3-1 winner. Would have written more but no was willing to comment on the skippers game:-)
On the other court FYB v Paul turned into a marathon encounter similar to FYB’s match of the previous week. FYB raced into an early lead in the 1st with his usual game proving too much for Paul, until Paul realised that to stand a chance he really had to stop putting the ball onto FYB’s racket on his back hand. He fought back to make the 1st closer than it ought to have been but maintained his game to take the second comfortably to tie it at 1-1. FYB took the 3rd relatively easily and took an early lead in the 4th. However Paul hung in and started playing his shots with some pretty good drop shots testing FYB’s stamina. At 8-5 up FYB was on course for a 3-1 until Paul hit a rich vein of winners to take a very tight 4th 10-8. In the 5th FYB again raced into a 5-0 lead with Paul having no answer until he again hit another rich vein to forge his way into a 6-5 lead. FYB held his nerve with some clever boasts to take an 8-6 lead before Paul clawed it back to 8-8. A crowd gathered on the balcony sensing that FYB’s winning run was coming to an end. But as the saying goes ‘never bet against a fat bloke in the 5th’ FYB again used a very clever boast to regain the serve and take the next 2 points for a 3-2 win. A very long match played the way it should be with both players enjoying it.
BB v Kevin – didn’t see much of this one either due to being on court and marking but this one also turned into a marathon with it swinging one way then the other. Fresh from a very good win the previous week BB got off to a good start taking the 1st before Kevin turned the game on it’s head to take the next 2. BB obviously had one eye on the ‘shirt’ because he upped his game to take the 4th. The 5th was far from comfortable with BB taking a lead only for Kevin to claw it back again. BB ran out the eventual winner and was quick to point out that FYB was in with a chance of being the ‘cabbage’. Count back proved to be in FYB’s favour with points against being identical but FYB scored 4 more points, thus ensuring his name wasn’t going to appear on the shirt just yet (and FYB threatened not to do the match report if he got the shirt)!
Woolley v Mark – with Woolley striking the ball hard and clean early on Mark struggled to get into the game and struggled with the pace of the ball. Marks errors generally dictated the outcome of the 1st but he got his game going in the 2nd with Woolley making the errors and taking the 2nd 9-0 to level it up at 1-1. The 3rd and 4th game were littered with good shots, good rallies and some poor shots with the marker becoming more involved and numerous let balls were played but with very few strokes awarded. Both players seemed aggrieved when FYB called ‘no let’ on a couple of occasions and told them to get on and play the ball! However that would be to distract from what in fact was a very good game of squash with both players showing off some excellent shots and showing the ability to think about their shots. However with Mark tiring Woolley had the edge, which he took full advantage of to run out a 3-1 winner.
Last but by no means least Phil & Brian took to the court at a time that Phil would normally be expecting to have finished off a few beers, had his supper and be looking forward to the sack! The 1st game was a close one with both players testing the other with some punishing rallies, particularly some of the ones played at the front of the court. A close first was taken by Phil but that must have taken it’s toll on Brian as Phil pushed home his advantage to win the next 2 quite comfortably.
So a 5-0 win which saw Cobdown end up on the same points as BLTC but with more games conceded.
Several well-earned beers were downed in the Bar afterwards and despite several helpings of curry and chips neither team could finish off the very good food on offer.
