Report

Report:At last, the Cobon Boys emerge victorious from yet another close encounter and ease their relegation fears a little!

Builder Boy v Lee saw a reversal of fortune for BB against a player who beat him first half. Some excellent squash from both players with BB always looking like he was playing the better squash, with Lee doing most of the retrieving. The 4th game looked to be the decisive one with BB 2-1 up and 8-5 up but lee had other ideas and clawed hios way back with BB looking like he’d had it when he conceded the 4th. Not so! BB was very impressive in the 5th and capitalized on any mistake that Lee made. Well played BB, best match he’s played this season.

Cagey v Mark looked like it had the makings of another close encounter until Mark bent double late in the 1st trying to get air into any orifice he could. Cagey saw his opponent’s weakness (lack of fitness!) kept his cool and kept Mark on the move as much as he could. Despite a valiant effort from Mark, Cagey rounded out a 3-0 win with consummate ease, tweaking a thigh muscle in the process.

Slim against Nanu was a bit of a yo-yo of a match with both players vying for court position, often coming into contact. Despite this it was played in a great spirit with both players complimenting each and the marker had little to do other than keep score. Mistakes by Slim at key stages enabled Nanu to take the 1st & 2nd games in what was a very tight match. Nanu was beginning to slow towards the end of the 2nd and Slim took his chance to win the 3rd convincingly with some outstanding drives, drops & lobs straight out of FYB’s coaching manual. The 4th was again very close with both players slowing and testing the markers resolve. Slim edged the 4th before going down in the 5th.

Hockey Boy v Neil was another game that went to the wire. Didn’t see much of this one but what little I did see saw both players taking turns to play great squash. HB looked to be down and out after losing the 4th 9-1 but drew on his many years of experience to take the 5th.

And so 3-1 up when it could so easily have been 3-1 down before FYB & Alan put in an appearance.

FYB had the upper hand in the 1st & 2nd pushing his opponent around the court. The 3rd & 4th saw Alan put in a spirited display to hang on to FYB’s coat tails and then play some outstanding drop & boast’s at the end of each game to take them and level it up at 2-2. FYB was tiring at this point and there was genuine concern his unbeaten record would be broken. However the old adage ‘never bet against a fat bloke in the 5th’ held true. FYB took command and ran out into a 5-0 lead with wicked reverse angle boasts, which had Alan looking to book a taxi! Alan gamely fought back to put FYB under pressure but couldn’t sustain it long enough to gain a foothold. 3-2 to the Fat Bloke!

And so - A new victim for the Cobon Cabbage Shirt in ‘Slim’ although there is some doubt over whether the shirt will fit.

A late finish but a good evenings effort by all.
