Report: | On a night of high drama international skipper Ben Newark's charges justified his late recall of two of Sundridge's finest Priory League stalwarts with a stunning late night win. Sparks toughed it out to clinch victory in the hostile arena that is the Tunbridge Wells squash rackets club. (Not the same place at all as the Tunbridge Wells leisure centre, as both Garth and Rich Hailston now know).
This win opens up a yawning gap between 7th and 8th position in Priory League 4 (or is it 5? Who knows?).
Two close defeats for Garth, the tough man from the veldt, and Rich "Golden Bars" Hailston, the man from the Bank of England, were followed by wins for their three team mates.
Garth said: "Gosh, if I wasn't quite so lazy on court I might have won that", or words to that effect. Except he used fewer words. And most of them began with "f".
Meanwhile on court A, Pascal played some stunning squash in the opening game, to lead 1-0. His Irish opponent came back strongly (for a bloke who must have been 25 years older than Pasc.) before Pasc brought his usual "je ne sais quoi" (or "what the f.... is that?" in Garth-speak) to the game to win convincingly 3-1.
So it was left to the Captain's two late picks to see the match out. "AC" Raby managed to avoid (just) stealing defeat from the jaws of victory to win 3-2. "Just as well, I had to spend the evening at home looking after his kids...glad somebody enjoyed themselves" a bit of half-Danish fluff was heard to say, rather bitterly I thought, later in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Boothy wrapped the match up with a 3-1 win at about 11.05pm. Falling behind 1-0, Rich. managed to achieve victory coming from behind ("He's always doing that", said a breathless Mrs Sarah Booth after the match) to clinch a hard earned win for the team.
"Its all down to the skipper", said the boys as one.
"He's got a job for life" said Sparks squash committee supremo Phil.
"Where is Ben?", asked several of the Toffs. For they missed Sundridge skipper's cheery off-court chats.
"I've got a selection problem now for next Tuesday, and no mistake, but its a nice problem to have", the skipper was heard to say. 'Twas ever thus. |
