Report

Report:PL's visit to Bromley CC saw the usual cast of thousands drafted in to shore up the leaking hull.

This time out, big Trev took on (ex) student James. Strange game really. James going 2-0 up despite a 7-2 lead for Trev in the 2nd. Then apparent disinterest took over for 2.5 games, seeing Trev progress to 7-1 up in the 5th. Not to be, sadly, as as ex-student rallied to snatch victory at the death.

Stand-in two; Kevin took on El Cap. The latter also looked as though he'd rather be somewhere else for the first half of the match. Kev went 9-0 and 8-1 up before El Cap found his range. From this point on it became a real battle with no quarter given either way. El Cap's lower mistake count as the match wore on paid dividends, and by the time the 5th arrived he was looking in charge. So another win and BCC two up.

London snr v Stabler next. Not much to say about this one. The author was comprehensively outplayed. A 5-2 lead in the 2nd was about all he could manage. Chop 3 or 4 inches off Sam's height and maybe things would have gone differently, but everything came back with interest.

Meanwhile next door, half of the PL cavalry had arrived in the form of Simon, pitted against King Lewy. Saw none of this. It lasted about the same length of time as London v Stabler, and with an almost identical (but reversed) scoreline. Having seen (and been on the end of) Simon's game before, I think I can imagine the way it went. Lewy pronounced himself lucky to have got the number of points he'd managed, and saved his best form for the bar afterwards. In fact he spent more time trying to get the message through to BCC's resident graphic designer - Sam, that Club Tropicana drinks are free than he did on court.

Last on was the masterclass of the evening. Having trekked hot-foot from another Surrey Cup game again, JEJ continued his impressive form against an out of sorts Ted. Several comments about "man versus boy" were to be heard in the gallery, and thus it was. James was totally in command. So simple but so effective. Ted was gutted enough that at 10:45pm the bar staff informed a totally disinterested El Cap that one of his team was to be found sitting outside on the terraces gazing across the pitch black cricket pitch. You should have stayed at PL Ted!

So, a defeat, for PL (despite scoring more points than BCC). Nevertheless a good match, and plenty of atmosphere. A variety of home supporters plus stalwarts Stan and Pat, messrs Miles, Blackman and Cotton were present (the latter looking pretty miffed to discover that the author had inexplicably turned down the sole reason for his appearance - the offer of Adrian Grant's services for the night). What an eejit as it turns out!

Next week Dulwich, with PL hopefully up to full strength. Should be interesting. Hopefully WW will have recovered too.
