Report: | With the result of the first half fixture not due to be finally determined until tomorrow, PL1 played host to Biggin Hill 2. Thanks to the recruitment of a fifth player at as late a point as possible (driving into the car park, winding down the window and enquiring whether Erdal fancied a game!!) PL managed a full line-up for once.
First up London jnr v Mortimer.
Despite early season protestations from The Hill that it would only ever be Ford OR Mortimer, it was both. Toby looked to be pretty out of sorts throughout this match. Steve wasn't about to give up on anything as usual, and Toby made far too many mistakes. One destroyed racket and a lucky escape from a self inflicted broken leg (with said racket), and Toby was looking as though he wished he hadn't bothered and heading off into the night. Steve wasn't terribly happy with the way he played, but controlled the match well and ran out a 3-0 winner.
Meanwhile on the graveyard court late recruit Erdal v Bushell.
This was over in a trice really. I didn't see any of it, but DC was in ultra-ruthless mode and chopped the hapless Ed for the sake of a single point (not that he seemed too traumatised - just not used to the step up in level). Thanks for turning out Ed. 3-0 to DC.
Back in civilisation London snr v Martin.
Alex had probably been rubbing his hands with glee having watched the author turn in yet another memorable performance (for all the wrong reasons) the previous day in Surrey Cup. His team selection suspicions were confirmed and he found himself relegated to no.4. Thankfully for the author, this was a step in the right direction in terms of the performance if not the result. The first two games were well contested and won by CD. A mini comeback was staged by the author to pouch the 3rd, but normal service resumed in the 4th, with Alex running out as 3-1 winner (talk of a nemesis conquered was later to be heard in the bar).
Meanwhile back in the wilds, Culver v Mayle.
Simon continued his one man demolition mission. He seems to be treating all of his appearances as a challenge to not drop more than two points in any game, with only BCC's King Lewy managing it so far (and that in only one game). Whilst I didn't see any of it, it seems to have been wrecking ball stuff again. The BH racket smashers association swung into action again, with another two rackets being minced by Alex.
Last on, the (deciding) match of the evening on the graveyard, Robbins v Ford.
As is to be expected with these two, this was a great game. A textbook example of how to make the game look easy from both players. JEJ having winged his way back from Epsom after dispatching one G.Pearman in Surrey Cup, looked to be in fine fettle in the first two games, whilst Ben made it look as though he was out for a Sunday stroll, all the while floating delicate cross court drop nicks in from all over the place.
JEJ made the mistake of calling one at the end of the 2nd, and tinned it, and whilst the rest of the match was good to watch, a gyppy ankle hampered his mobility somewhat from here-on in. Ben got more and more into his stride and controlled the game to run out a 3-1 winner and clinch the match for BH.
So, another close one, and PL still struggling to get a win. The early season BH chit-chat about being potential relegation fodder is proving to be about as convincing as expected. It seems they have an internal club competition going on to see who can downplay their team the most. ML is still edging it (see this week's bleating about the struggle to get a team out that then promptly destroys Rodmersham), but DC is sneaking up on the blind side ... |
