Report: | Report to follow from Mr London
On the plus side it was nice to see the out of retirement David back and playing, I didn't see Ray Bushell around so I'm pretty sure Joe didn't put him back into retirement (Ray seems to collect Daves rackets off him whenever he retires, he's made a fortune out racket sales!). Thanks to Tom and Joe for stepping into to help out a very depleated Bexley ...
The return of one of PL's stalwarts occurred tonight. Bringing forward his comeback by about 12 months, Dave Harris returned to the fold.
So, this was a full PL team at last. Expecting a weak Bexley, I was somewhat surprised to see a couple of very handy recruits (more Outer Kent renegades), brought in to bolster their line-up.
First on Magor v Harris.
Dave looked to have no problem with striking the ball after not playing for some while. The fitness was another matter though. Despite a big lead in the 2nd, Joe's consistency proved to be too tough a nut to crack and Dave went down 0-3. Good to see him back though.
Next door, Harrison v Robbins.
Didn't see too much of this one, but Duane seemed to be suffering the after effects of marquee construction and JEJ maintained a pretty tight grip on the whole match. Duane seems convinced he'll eventually beat James (when he's 60). Not for the want of trying over the years, but not tonight Josephine. 3-0 to JEJ.
Next up James v London snr.
I hesitate to proffer an opinion on this one. From my perspective it was like Groundhog Day. Same old cr*p as the past several weeks, but this apparently wasn't a universally shared opinion. Somebody at least feels they need to make me feel better about the situation! Paul just had too much, working the ball around the court very well, stringing the author out to all four corners. The author's inability to cope with the grippiness of the walls, meant that a lot of stuff was pinging out only to be punished. This and the number of simple missed drops meant the frustration levels inevitably rose. So 3-1 to Paul.
Next door, and (as usual) over pretty quickly, May v Culver.
Wrecking Ball continued his weekly assassination squad mission, this time against Bexley's second new recruit, Tom. Didn't see any of it, but judging from the lecture Tom was getting from Joe in the bar afterwards, Tom's reliance on a defensive game wasn't a successful tactic. I'm starting to feel bad about asking for subs each week from WB - but not THAT bad. The scorer was only troubled for the sake of 3 points by Tom. Mission accomplished 3-0 to Simon.
So 2-2 and the decider was Steeden v London jnr.
This was a marathon. The Duracell Bunny (yes that's Old Man) never seemed to get tired, despite the oppressive heat of the evening. Nip and tuck all the way, Mark played some good stuff to prove that he's now adapted his game to fatherhood. He must have played more half decent drop shots in this match than in the rest of his life put together. Steve on the other hand looked a bit cheesed off, and despite a flurry of nicks, allowed himself to be pegged back in the 4th, shunning several blatant opportunities to claim strokes. The 5th was tight all the way, with Steve just edging it. 3-2 to Steve.
A narrow win for PL, but we'll take what we can get. Slack produced some fine fare (geddit?) afterwards, having been relegated to head chef whilst he recovers from the results of bashing himself too often with a tennis racket (apparently). Onwards and upwards ... |
