Report: | Summer is in the air and at long last PL have a spring in their step after last nights visit to Dulwich. Normally this fixture is doom and gloom for PL, but for a change PL managed to field a full side. Dulwich were short of Tim G, but had a very capable substitute in Jason Barry.
First on Claudet v London snr.
A strange game for the author. The court was boiling hot. Large leads were piled up by the author in all of the first three games. Two of these were nearly squandered but enough was done to scrape a 2-0 lead. However, 5-2 up in the 3rd was turned around by Andy, and this was swiftly followed by an 8-1 lead in the 4th. After getting too negative about things up to this point, a comeback of sorts saw the author feeling a bit happier with his game. Some useful tips from no.1 son in the break saw the comeback continue with the last being wrapped up comfortably.
Meanwhile across the way, Taylor v Culver.
The PL wrecking ball continued his serene progress through the season with another crushing defeat of his opponent. Paul is certainly no mug, but my spies tell me that Simon was his usual unflappable self, and the nudges, comments etc produced absolutely no reaction at all. Four points dropped this week. You wouldn't want a wally of the week competition with this guy in your team.
Next up, a marathon - Grinnel v Harris.
Dave is still trying to build back up to something like his normal level, and is finding it a battle at present. Dr Grinnel was very mobile, and kept Dave under pressure. Dave just about squeaked the 2nd and 3rd, but was visibly wilting by the end of a tough 4th. Nevertheless, he cut back the mistakes on the backhand short stuff, and just about managed to edge it in a very tight 5th. A good one to watch, and judging by Dave's pained expression throughout, and uncomfortable looking warm-down, a hard one to play in. Still, with plenty of family support, he turned in a good result.
Next door, Barry v Robbins.
Showing an admirable level of dedication to the team, JEJ had rushed back from what is rapidly becoming his regular Tuesday night early evening engagement - in Epsom. This time it was a golf day. Foregoing the slap up feast at the RAC Club that Tim had stayed for, JEJ had rushed hot-foot back to take on Jason. Another long match on a hot court. This one ran and ran (though not quite as long as Ben v Dave). The expected brand of tight squash was on show, with the game ebbing and flowing either way. JEJ was a bit unlucky not to grab the 3rd having been 8-6 up, and by the time the 4th was underway, the amount of work done to this point was starting to take its' toll. Jason was his usual machine-like self and kept up the pace to take the 4th and the match.
Last on, Moore v London jnr.
Steve made the mistake of wearing brand new shoes for the first game in this one, and was pretty leaden footed as a result. Andy was in no mood to mess about and took the game pretty comfortably. Cue shoe change, and an about turn in the match. Steve was a different player from the 2nd onwards, lighting the afterburners to accelerate away into the distance in each of the remaining games leaving Andy trailing a distant second and probably with something of a sense of deja vu after the first half mauling by WB.
This wrapped up a most satisfactory result for PL, and we now await the outcome of the BCC v Dulwich match to see where we finish. This could be an interesting one, as both teams seem to have a very different idea of how this is going to work from what I hear on the rumour mill. Dulwich seem to think it's due to be played next week, whilst BCC apparently think the points are in the bag via a walkover. Interesting to see the outcome of this then.
The usual quality nosh was on offer by the time the match eventually drew to a close at 11.20pm. A good night. |
