Report: | Rodmersham snatch defeat from the Jaws of Victory!
Now the match was rearranged from Monday, this meant rather than spending my time watching the matches to note amusing incidents to include in the match report I spent the first half of the evening playing my Surrey Cup match then driving like I stole it up to Biggin Hill.
The scene that greeted me was not good. Rory (Sheep Head) Pennell has already lost 3-0 to Malcolm (Tenacious) Parker. By all accounts this match consisted of Malcolm playing tight deep retrieving squash and Rory going for the nick.. AND MISSING!
Fazarn (Racketball) Rasheed and John (Famous Marathon Man) Brewer had just started knocking up as I took marking duties on the other court. Gorden (Silver Fox) McManus was playing Tom (Explosive Deceptive Nick) Woods. The first two games rolled of very quickly with Silver Fox not playing very tight and Tom sending Silver Fox the wrong way or slamming it in the nick at 100 mph. At this point I looked across to the other match and Racketball was 7-0 down. Where was Mr Lennox? I looked over to see him standing in the corner head in hands looking very white and muttering “it’s all gone wrong, it’s all gone wrong!”
Silver Fox went 7-1 down in the 3rd and then started to finally play some tight squash. Tom to be fair was just too good and ran out 10-8 with a 3-0 win. At this point Racketball had smashed his way to 1-0 over Famous Marathon Man, from this point Racketball seemed in control and snuck a rather close 3-0 win. (2-1 to Rodersham)
Mr Lennox was on Court against Graham (Sometime I wonder why I play this game!) Harraway. By all accounts this was played at a fast pace and as I popped my head up to ask for a marker (Thank you Mr Stimpson!) Mark was 1-0 down having lost to Graham 3-1 in a cup match last year.
On the other court Dean (Dedicated Follower of Fashion) Newberry versus Martin (I’ve never played so bad in my life) Clark. I raced to a 7-0 lead. At this point Martin tightened up and I didn’t, 7-7. Then as per usual with me some sheer determination and I’ve grinded out a 9-7 win. The second game was a reverse of the first and with some good support from the away crowed 9-7 to Martin. In the start of the 3rd hundreds of people appeared to watch and I figured Mr Lennox had just finished losing. The next two games followed a pattern of Martin trying to play some very ambitious winners and hitting the tin and I just playing tight simple (well I am simple anyway) squash.
With some pride restored I walk upstairs to find that Mr Lennox had started to play varied squash (whatever that is!) and won 3-1. So Game set and match 3-2 to Biggin Hill, Mark is still smiling now! Off to the bar for some good chat, beers and Sheppard’s pie with some Special Biggin Hill Brown Source (you’ve got to try it)!
Next week we are off to Cascades. That could be interesting …..
