Report: | A Trip Down Memory Lane
Week 4 and we are off to Mote, Sat Nav programmed in and off we go. On arrival Mr Lennox and I comment on how this place looks all too familiar, then we realized we had both played matches here as juniors nearly 20 years ago. So knock on the door, 5 minute wait while Mote contemplates not letting us in and claiming a walk over and we are underway.
First on Rory (Playing a lot better) Pennell verses Peter (Misunderstood) Knowles. Didn’t see much of this game as I was on court but Peter raced to a 6-1 lead, probably by retrieving everything with his fitness then hitting some frame winner(Rory’s comment’s not mine! But a squash bat is slightly heavier than a badminton one!). So the fact Peter has only been playing 15 months and Rory 15 years started to tell, Rory informed me a fairly comfortable 3-0 win.
Next on was Farzan (TK) Rasheed verses Jonny (My PSL side) Powell. Didn’t see any of this as I was still on court but I think Jonny was a bit out classed by TK. TK also didn’t quite get Mr Lennox’s instructions of give him a game. Sorry Jonny, but better translation is needed for TK in these situations I think! 3-0 to Farzan.
Meanwhile on the Other court Dean (Boast and Drop) Newberry was having a bit of a battle with Paul (Boast and drop a bit more) Adam. Dean raced to an 8-2 lead in the first before Paul pegged a few points back but eventually lost the first. The second game was a lot closer with both of us boasting & dropping as much as we could! But again an odd straight drive gave Dean the second. At the start of the 3rd a bit of a crowd gathered only to disappear after seeing us boast and drop some more! This was good quality squash. Paul was getting the better of this game and took the 3rd quite easily. Some key advice by Captain Lennox (if only he could listen too!) and Dean found a new shot called a straight drive. 9-0, 3-1 to Dean.
Next on was Gorden (Sliver Fox Brown Shirt!) McManaus versus Phil (Air Shot) Crane. Phil seamed to be a bit star struck by Gorden or nervous for some reason as I am sure he can play a lot better than he did. But Gorden kept to his task and a comfortable 3-0 victory was obtained.
On the other court Mark (OUT) Lennox had raced to a 2-0 lead against Sean (Winning Ugly) Wardman. Rory comments on how it was only 21:30 so it will be a nice early night for once (Commentators eye Rory!). Now both Gorden & I have played Sean in the past and both lost 3-2 from a 2-0 lead. From this I can only assume that he is a very cleaver player, discovering people’s weaknesses and exploiting them more and more as the match goes on. So an hour later and Sean closes out the match 3-2 with some contact, disagreements, decision influencing (Rory to Jonny), tough decisions (Well marked Jonny by the way, I wouldn’t have wanted to mark this match!), advice given but not taken (Mark we have to work on this!), and clever squash (Sean), its then off to the bar.
With Farzan and Gorden gone (They are vegetarians, but don’t worry they are safe in the shower ;) ) the rest of us sit down to a nice home cooked curry and with some sad chat about Drugs, the Pro Circuit and anything else squash related we can think of. Having had some good hospitality and a good crowd to watch the matches is off for another 01:00 bed time.
