Report: | The Hillbillies Raid Tunbridge Wells
Following several weeks of challenges, recruitment and political ramblings the Hillbillies season got under way with a trip to raid the quiet town of Tunbridge Wells.
First up was Rory (Sheep Head) Pennell verses Jolyon (First to 11 please) Head. Now I must confes I didn’t see a single point of this match as I was on the other court. It did look like a good close match, Sheep Head came off moaning about how poor he played and that he needed to work on his fitness (nothing new there then!). But Sheep Head grinded out a good start for the Hillbilies with a 3-2 win
Meanwhile on the other court Camp Ninja Deano was in a battle with Paul (I Don’t mind losing to nice chaps) McLeod. The first was very tight; Paul came out on fire and went 4-0 up. The monotony of my game then started to boar Paul and I came out with a 9-7 win. The 2nd and 3rd were very strange games, CND wining the 2nd from 8-0 to 9-2 in a breeze and Paul the 3rd from 8-0 to 9-4 in a similar fashion. The 4th started off tight but I think my fitness or Paul’s lack off came in to play and the hillbillies got there second win of the night, 3-1.
Next up was Neil (Drafted in at One) Hitchens verses Colin (It’s been 20 years!) Payne. The quality of the squash was very good in this match and it’s good to see Colin playing back in the Kent leagues. The 1st started off with Neil racing to a 4-0 lead only for Colin to peg back to 4-4 up. At which point Colin a bit confused asked if it was the best of 1 first to 5? Neil being half Colin’s Age (and Weight?) seemed to win most of the rallies and took the game. The next two were fairly comfortable and the Hillbilles to went 3-0 up.
On the other court Gorden (Silver Fox) McManus was now 2-0 down to Steve. Gorden was 3-0 up in the 3rd when one of Tunbridge Wells supporting crew commented on why Gorden was playing at 4 as they were convinced that CND would beat him easily. Gorden must have heard this and the working drops and sublime boast started to roll into the nick. Paul seemed a bit perplexed by this and a difficult let call to Steve’s dislike at 6-5 to Gorden in the 3rd gave meant Gorden took that game with ease. The next two games followed a similar pattern and the same Tunbridge Wells supporter comment was ‘Oh that’s why he’s not number 5!” as Gorden fought through to a 3-2 win with pride restored.
The final match saw Mark (Mr Lennox to you!) Lennox versus Andrew. This, as with most of Mr Lennox’s matches was a bit of a hack fest but to his credit Mr Lennox always seemed to be a bit tighter and more controlled than Andrew. At one point in the first Mark was sent the wrong way be Andrew and king of just fell over in the forehand corner. Much barracking and comments about commitment and diving saw some real focus from Mr Lennox. A few sublime forehand in the backhand corner drop shots and some as per usual unbelievable gets seamed to keep Mr Lennox in control. Afterwards he did comment on how he felt he played the best squash for months. Mr Lennox, it wasn’t that good and I think it’s just your new strings that did it.
So off to the bar for pizza and beer, much talk about rule changes, player movement and the realization that the last time Colin played Kent league his opponent wasn’t even born. Paul also mentioned that he didn’t mind losing to a nice bloke like Dean and not to a to**er for once, he doesn’t know me very well! Great hospitality from the opposition and a good start to the season.
