Report: | Squash is a non contact sport!
Off to Cascades for the 1st installment of what will be who finishes top. A great night of squash was in order as team had been agreed all we needed to do was turn up and watch it unfold. That was if both teams kept to their agreed line ups, thankfully they did and what a night of squash was delivered!
1st up was the 3rd string match Rory (Must do better Mr) Pennell verses Neil (I want to play at 1) Baker. This was going to be an interesting one after must do better Mr’s performance last week. But do better he did and playing his usual brand of lazy looking squash Rory won 3-0. Neil to be fair made a few too many errors and on a quick not just wants some tough games and doesn’t mind what no he plays at.
2nd on court was the 5th and 4th string matches. Deano (It’s a Let Tim please play on) Newberry verses Ash (It’s just to hot) Tomlyn and Mark (scamper) Lennox verses Stuart (I’m just Playing for time) Lamprell. Dean won the 1st 9-1 before Ash had even got going or the other match had even gone on court. But Ash is no mug and raced to a 8-5 lead in the 2nd. Dean once again grinded back to a 10-8 win. This seemed to take its toll an Ash’s fitness and from 4-4 in the 3rd Dean powered to a 3-0 win. By this point Mark was 2-0 in a similar pattern. 9-1 in the 1st and close but won the 2nd. From this point I popped my head up to see a very tired Stuart sending Mark scampering to all 4 corners, then at some point either putting it in the tin or just stopping. But both were good competitive games and the win was sealed with BH 3-0 up.
Next on were Phil (boast & drive) Nightingale and Alex (Gadget Man) Ingham. This again was a fairly close 3-0 win, I think (it could have been 3-1) but this time for Cascades. It was a match of some very long rallies with not many winners. Only point of interest was Alex nearly loosing the 2nd and getting a whack on the nose buy Phil. Please remember guy’s, squash is a non contact sport!
The final match on was Tim (The Vole) Vail and Farzan (run, run and run some more) Rasheed. What a match this was, I think we could have match of the season all ready. Tim by his own account had not played for 6 weeks so a slow start in coming to terms with Farzan’s hit hard and run game meant a fairly comfortable win for Farzan in the 1st game. Tim is no mug thou and some very cleaver squash and obscene nick’s saw him take the next two games to go 2-1 up. With the match over on the other court the balcony was full and this was when the match got very interesting. Tim was starting to look a bit tired and with some very cleaver fake runs to mean Farzan was putting the ball on his racket Tim raced to a 6-2 lead. By this point the game had slowed to a more manageable pace so Frazan cracked the whip and speed it back up again.
7 let calls at 8-7 match ball to Tim, Farzan then receives the serve with an audacious cross court roll out nick to get serve back and eventually take the match to a 5th game. In the 4th & 5th games Tim seemed to be getting frustrated with what he called shoving by Farzan, Lots of lets (I only saw slight contact and from both players as it happens!) and discussions on the rules later and we are a 7 all in the 5th. Tim plays another unbelievable low cross court volley nick to take match ball again. This time unlike the 4th Farzan takes the point into a rally and it unfortunately ends in an unforced forehand drive into the tin. Match 3-2, 9-7 in the 5th to Tim.
The time was now nearly 11:30, so some food, pre-ordered bears and good banter we are off home. A very late night for Tim, I got home at 12:40 and he lives’ 1 ½ hours further away from me. Pro’s like that should be welcome in any league! Next week we have another trek into the depths of Kent with an away fixture to Mote (Maidstone, I thought this was supposed to be North West Kent!)
