Report: | Hillbillies confirm dominance in the Midnight Rematch
Casacades paid a visit to the Hillbillie’s Ranch last night for a rematch of the closely contested first half encounter at Cascades. The Ranch was prepared with stands in place; some pre match doubles racquetball for entertainment and the crowd of 50+ with beer at the ready for another great night of squash. Both sides had strengthened up slightly with Cascades bringing in Yorkshire County Player Phil Rushworth at leaving their “Normal Number One” Neil Baker at 4 and only remaining club player Stuart Lamprell at 5. The Hillbillies had brought in Stacy Ross at 1, moving Farzan down to 2. Pro Phil Nightingale was dropped so the trio of Rory, Mark and Dean remained at 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
First on court was Rory (it that a girl?) Pennel against Phil (Scamper) Rushworth. Rory acquitted himself well against Phil but the Yorkshire player always seemed to retrieve more and play slightly tighter. Phil won the first then Rory’s head dropped as Phil took the second 9-0. Some expert advice from team mate Stacy (Hit it harder and run faster!) and Rory played a lot better in the third but ended up losing 3-0.
Next on the other court was first mammoth match of the night, Mark (Retrieve & retrieve some more) Lennox at 4 was up against Neil (Normal Number One) Baker. Mark shot out of the blocks and went 6-0 up, Neil then pegged it back to 7-5 but Mark just had enough to take the 1st game. Neil then took control of the next two games to take a 2-1 lead. A bit of advice to Mark from yours truly and a very close 4th that Mark took 9-7 and we are into the 5th. Neil had clearly given his all and some error free squash and continued retrieving from Mark meant a 9-0 win in the 5th after 1hr and 40mins to tie the Match at 1-1.
On the other court was to top billing match of Stacy (good advice) Ross against Tim (rule book) Vail. I must admit two things here. I expected Stacy to win this fairly comfortably and 2, I didn’t see a single shot of this match. So, Tim won the 1st (with what I imagine was a lot of audacious nicks?), Stacy then took the next two, (with some tight controlled squash?). Tim took the 4th (again with some clever nicks and deceptive shots?). The 5th was a much tighter affair with lots of decisions being questioned (I could hear that) but Stacy took it 9-3, or had he, having match ball being called and shaken hands Tim mentioned that contact had occurred on Stacy’s winning forehand drop. Stacy confirmed and a let was given. With the crowed now watching the other match the game continued. Tim managed to claw back 3 more points to put some element of doubt in mind, but Stacy then finally took the match (again!) 9-6.
It was 2-1 to the hillbillies with the match still in the balance as the final 2 matches went on court. Farzan (Yes) Rasheed was against Alex (techno) Ingham. Didn’t see any of this either but I am reliable informed Alex played well to take a 5-2 lead in the 1st then 7-4 lead in the 2nd. Farzan thought was able to step up a gear each time to take both games. Farzan also took the 3rd comfortably to take the Match 3-0 and mean the Hillbillies took the tie.
The last match of the night although a dead rubber involved the two club members who both wanted to win more than most. Dean (Colourful) Newberry was playing Stuart (I’m exhausted) Lamprell. Stuart took the first with some very tight drop shots on both sides. Dean then upped the pace and retrieving ability and took the second comfortably. The 3rd was nip and tuck all the way up to 7 all. Stuart played a loose but good length drive to the forehand. Dean then claimed slight contact on his wrist as he was about to hit the ball. I probably should have played it but asked for a let, Stacy didn’t see it, Stuart didn’t feel it (It was very slight), no let was the decision and 8-7 to Stuart. Queue angry Dean, 100mph squash and 10-8 to Dean. By now it was 23:15 so most of the crowd had disappeared (Light weights!). Stuart took the 4th with more great tight winners but it took all that was left in him. Some better retrieving and tighter squash saw Dean take the 5th 9-0.
By now it was 23:50 and I must admit I was suffering from exhaustion so missed the beers and food and even the goodbyes, but it was another great night of squash and the top 4 playoff position matches should be something to look forward to. Next week we have the Mighty Mote visiting the Hillbilly Ranch.
