Report

Report:The start of the play-off round of matches saw PL1 entertaining Tunbridge Wells last night. PL again at full strength (I must go and have a lie down - this reliability of team line-up is amazing), and TW a bit under strength.

First up London snr v MacLeod.
Paul seemed very keen to exploit the author's reluctance to get on court first. Sure enough, he went out of the blocks fast, building up a big lead. The author managed to get into the game late on, sneaking it at the end, and after that the balance of play changed. The only hiccup came when Paul pinned the author's foot to the floor by standing on it and then blaming him for not getting out of the way! With that put aside PL were on the scoreboard.

Next door, Harris v Lawton.
Didn't see any of this. Dave is still struggling with fitness, largely due to the demands of his new job, but has plenty of experience and ability to fall back on. Despite my initial misreading of the scorecard leading me to think he'd gone two down, it was in fact the other way round, and after a rest break in the 3rd Dave eased his way to a hard fought 3-1 win.

Next on Robbins v Payne.
Deprived of his car for the day, JEJ had managed to cadge a lift from Croydon to PL and duly went on against Colin, who these days seems pleased to get the odd game in. From what I saw of this one, it looked to be a good match. Both players were hitting tight lengths and widths for the majority of the match. The first three games were very tight either way, and it took until the 4th for JEJ to really get on top, rounding off an efficient performance to win 3-1.

Next door, London jnr v Head.
Steve seemed to be wishing he was anywhere else than on court to judge from the unimpressed looks he was casting around throughout the match. As is so often the case, he made pretty hard work of this one. It was a real battle with Jolyon making Steve work for every point. Despite all of this, Steve always seems to come through eventually, and did so again to win 3-0. One of the crowd was afterwards heard to observe "why does Steve look like that when he's just won"? The answer to that question could probably be obtained by watching the final match of the evening.

Last on Culver v Ward.
Paul was keen to exhort his man to achieve great things, and as marker I had to resist the temptation to predict what was actually going to happen. WB continued his amazing run of performances this summer, still having yet to drop a single game in both Surrey Cup and Priory. Despite his usual slightly slow start (he suffered two hand-outs in the first game - excusable having sat around after being first there until nearly 10pm to get on court), WB was soon into his stride. Andy was pummelled into submission, not really getting into any of the games. The match was done and dusted in about 15-20 mins, and this wrapped up a good 5-0 for PL.

Post match dietary advice was dispensed by that paragon of eating virtue - JEJ, advising Colin that his penchant for curry and Haribos was likely to be bad for his heart. Mars bars and crisps are obviously fine though.

A bit of post match detective work to try and locate Jolyon's vanished racket was ultimately successful at the death. It had mysteriously made its' way into Steve's bag where it successfully evaded detection, despite the author's best efforts to locate it.

And so PL slunk away into the night contemplating a good start to the play-offs. BCC next week ...
