Report: So to the finale …
The Biggin Hill Billies with an uphill task against the Men of Dulwich.

Sadly the drama of 2008 was missing, when Captain Marlow’s cross-court flick sent John down the wrong Lane to seal victory at the death.

This time there wasn’t the same degree of tension in the rarefied Dulwich air, but still the job needed to be done and any side that under estimated a quality line-up that the BH boys regularly put out was likely to come unstuck.

It was always going to be a tough night for the away side when their ‘banker’ Iain got caught in traffic en route and was unable to post the usual quick victory on the scoreboard before checking out the bar.

After a tough first Jason did everything better, playing faster, quicker and longer to see off Obaid in straight games and seal the win the kept the trophy at Burbage Road for another year. Meanwhile Tim and Stacey were having another tight encounter. A couple of lucky bounces helping the home player to the first and after a tough tussle in the second, Stacey came back strongly in the third with his trade mark short swing deftly dropping the ball into the nick. However, in the fourth he looked in discomfort from a bit of back pain and was unable to stop the Dulwich captain closing it out in four.

Meanwhile PG was having a quality encounter with Lee. Since being seen off in style before Christmas Lee has been back playing on a regular basis and was keen to see where he was at. PG on the other, knew where he was at … back after a late night and a tough match in PSL. This made for an intriguing encounter which had the crowd split on whether to watch this match or the potentially explosive encounter next door. Those that stayed would have seen Lee come out on top, so there’s no doubt he is back to where he was at some point, whenever that may have been!

The caged tiger aka ‘Iain not on first’, was desperate to get on at the earliest opportunity but Tucker had survived an exploding loo on the train (seriously!) to make it to the club, so needed time to compose himself. And also knock out a bit more study, given his imminent exams. When they finally made it to the court Iain started like a man who needed a beer (to add to the pre-match libation he had enjoyed) while Tucker looked like a man who needed some sleep. A match that could have exploded barely fizzled, which was probably best for everyone, esp. the referee, yours truly!

So with the match, if not the league, evenly poised Will took on retro tracksuit model Gordon. Despite the great threads Gordon, was unable to make an impression on young William who demonstrated how much he has improved since their last five set encounter with three nil win.

The food never happened, partly because there was a general empathy amongst the clientele, but equally as the chef had definitely reached the end of the road, and was happy to abide by captains orders.

So Dulwich retained the title after another fun season [hopefully this year the end of season drinks will include tequila rather than sambucca after the 10pm threshold] but the Hill Billies have to be commended for putting up a great fight, and have for having the best looking supporters!
