Report: | I suppose given the burst of early season enthusiasm from various other journos in the Priory parish, I'd better construct a few words about the Rodmersham v PL1 fixture.
Before commencing a description of the evening's proceedings, I have to say (particularly after reading the last two week's bleatings from BCC's El Cap), I am particularly looking forward to the PL v BCC fixture. There seems to have been an awful lot of banging on about The Hill poaching Teddie Boy from BCC. Well just to set the record straight:
(a). he was a dyed (no pun intended) in the wool PL boy until BCC poached him from us for the summer!!!
(b). he issued repeated assurances to yours truly amongst others at PL, that PL was where he was coming back to for the winter.
(c). this (despite severely stitching up PL's chances for the season - and judging from his lowly BH team slot, TJ's) is the last bleat from here.
Anyway, rant over and onto the match.
Having foolishly capitulated to rearranging the fixture to a Monday, PL found themselves short of personnel again. One of these days I'll learn not to relent and weaken my own team to fit in with others. Needless to say the Rodders boys were bristling with talent.
First on McCaughan v Clark.
First stand-in Kev having generously offered his services (with the minimum of arm twisting), took a bit of a battering from Martin, who seemed to be lashing the ball with some considerable accuracy to all corners of the court. Kev got it back on track in the 3rd by sneaking through 10-8 (this providing the milestone of being PL's first point of the season), but was unable to continue the good work, eventually going down 3-1.
Next door, Woods v Young.
Second (even later, and even more committed given the conditions for his release for the evening), stand-in Zeb seems to have rediscovered his appetite for squash. Well he found himself up against a player who was keen to set the record straight after having been severely rinsed in last week's match report from El Cap (him again!). Tom, despite Zeb playing some reasonable squash, always looked in control of this one. His usual brand of clean ball-striking wasn't marred by too many mistakes, whereas Zeb often ended the rallies with a mistake, often it has to be said as a result of the pressure being applied.
Anyway, Tom cleaned up in tidy fashion to record a 3-0 win.
Next Baker v London snr.
After a layoff for hols, the author wasn't expecting too much from this one based on recent results against Neil. Amazingly, things seemed to go pretty well for the first game. Despite an attempt to give it back again from 8-4 up, the author took the 1st. Sadly it wasn't to continue. Neil improved his length game and the author never really came to terms with it, lapsing into the old cross-court crud again. So 3-1 to Neil and the team with nothing to play for!
Meanwhile next door, Brewer v Robbins.
Having been forced to retire in their last encounter, JEJ had assured the team captain that he'd be getting a result from this one. Well, so it proved, but not without a major battle. This was the usual game between these two from what I saw of it, JEJ dictating the play, but John producing his usual brand of athletic court coverage, with an array of winners mixed in. It went right to the wire, with John eventually lapsing into a few too many errors in the 5th. It was also notable for one other reason. John actually got annoyed on court: something as common as rocking horse sh*t. Anyway, 3-2 to James.
Last on Parker v Thompson.
Martin, having transferred his allegiance from BLTC to PL in the transfer window has had a pretty tough couple of weeks. Last week it was a bashing at the hands of BH's resident sense of humour transplant. This week, despite some in-the-know tips from PL's coaching staff, the wheels really fell off after a promising start to the 1st game. Malc's brand of low tight game obviously didn't agree with Martin, and he was to be seen, head in hands, contemplating a visit to a sports psychologist after the match.
So, all in all, a pretty inauspicious day for PL. We all repaired to the bar, where the usual grand Woods family spread was on offer. Tom seemed happy to consume a sizeable chunk of it as usual - well you said you enjoyed the match reports didn't you? The rest of the evening was spent taking the mick out of that person I said I'd never mention again, so at least it ended on a high note. |
