Report

Report:PL visited their fellow relegation strugglers (Dulwich II) last night with, for a change, a full team! Hang out the flags.

What eventually turned out to be a healthy point scoring win for PL was looking distinctly unpromising early on.

First up Marlow v Harris.
On the back of a good win in his last match aginst T.Wells, Dave struggled with this one. Wily old campaigner Duncan pushed him all the way, soon sussing out that Dave wasn't over keen to keep picking up backhand drops. Dave for his part spent just a bit too much time putting in his own backhand drops. This worked a treat at the start with some good winners, but once this tactic became apparent, Duncan started counter dropping and boasting Dave off court. Still, despite going match balls down in the 5th and producing an outrageous fluke to save one of them, Dave hung on in there to sneak it.

Next door, Matt looked to be well over his layoff, quickly advancing to a 2-0 lead against a mistake ridden Ian. The balance of play started to swing at this point however. Ian wound his vocal chords up to near maximum, and Matt started looking like he'd rather be somewhere else. Having stormed back to 2-2 though, Ian promptly went off the boil in the 5th leaving a relieved Matt to take the match quite comfortably at the death.

So, all set fair. Next up Claudet v London snr.
The author was a little apprehensive about this one having performed a Houdini act to win during the last encounter. An early twinge from an errant calf muscle didn't help, but despite this the 1st was pouched 10-8. The rest of the match was quite tight, but the author managed to keep the ball in difficult enough places to force Andy into the odd error, running out a 3-0 winner.

Across the way, Kendall v Thompson.
Didn't see any of this one but despite a lapse of concentration in the 2nd, Martin seems to have comfortably eased his way past Matt. The hard low boasts apparently paid dividends against an opponent, who by his own admission, wasn't quite operating at a high enough level.

Last on, Hughes v Robbins.
With their girlie no.1 now on sabbatical in the Far East, Brendan found it his lot in life to prop up Dulwich's sagging campaign against JEJ. Things were looking up for the Dulwich man when James fell awkwardly, going over on that dodgy ankle again early in the 1st. Despite much hobbling, and the prospect of some severe stiffness the next day, James proceeded to fall back on the kind of shots that most of us can only dream of playing. Deft little flicks and floated cross court nick drops mixed in with the usual tight lengths did the trick, with JEJ making pretty light work of it to round off a thoroughly successful night in what is looking like it's going to be a long haul.

... and so to the bar (just for El Cap)! JEJ consuming three suppers, Dave on the phone to the Columbian barons, the full skinny on all sorts of shenanigans from Langley Towers and the saga of the Langley Boys school rebuild.
