Report: | PL visited The Hill for a relegation "thriller" last night. With the new heating turned up to maximum and the courts in tip-top shape a gripping match was in prospect (ho ho).
First up - Lennox v London snr.
The author having been accused of being a jammy b**tard in about the 3rd rally, AGFB proceeded to (a) play his opponent off court and (b) repeatedly demonstrate what shall hereinafter be officially termed "The Biggin Hill" shot. This shot turns defence into immediate attack, if not winner, and left a frustrated author scrabbling around in McManus style head-shaking mode. So, an auspicious start for PL (not).
Next door - Pennell v Robbins.
JEJ is still struggling with the ankle, but after a (very) late fitness test, decided the team's need outweighed good sense. Whether a cortisone jab was need remains unknown, but straight-line Jim managed to turn in a very respectable performance. The first two games were won fairly comfortably, but after this Rory started to employ the boast to good effect. This mixed in with a fair few trademark overhead nicks saw JEJ struggling to stay with it, and unusually getting pretty tetchy with the marker. Anyway, just enough done to sneak the 4th to win.
Next up - Lane v Thompson.
The sartorial elegance of Hill's resident copper seems to be well intact, and these two took to the court for a good old hack, with the ball accelerating off the floor as though it were greased (what you mean it wasn't)? Not a game for the purist really, but a lot of hard fought rallies nonetheless, with Martin doing enough to wrap up a good 3-1 win to put PL in the driving seat.
Next door - Miles v Harris.
These two ex-teammates started off as though they didn't want any rally to last longer than 3 shots. Dave started to look as though he was in control having taken the 1st and gone 5-1 up in the 2nd. Cue a flurry of missed drop shots, and John winning the game. The pattern was repeated in the 3rd with John taking a 2-1 lead. At this point several members of the PL coaching staff were dispatched downstairs with a remit to get Dave to hit the cr*p out of the ball, as when he was doing that, he looked well in control. After repeated exhortations of this nature, the message got through and Dave cruised through the 4th. In the decider, we were back to quite a few short balls, but this time they went up, and saw Dave taking the decider.
Last on - Bushell v Bennett.
DC really didn't look a happy bunny at all. His analysis was, that Torvill and Dean after two hours of being moaned at in the gallery held little attraction. It looked like it too with a subdued performance as comeback kid Michael powered the ball around the skiddy court to good effect. A good 3-0 win to round up a good night (!) for PL.
TJ got the usual slagging in the bar (isn't this required behaviour everywhere now?). DC sat in the corner looking about as happy as for the rest of the evening (which made the author feel much better as he's not the only one who can't buy a win). The one piece of happy news for the hosts; with their proprietor stateside, they had their cheapest slate in living memory. Food (sorry) for thought there maybe ...? |
