Report: | BIGGIN HILL NOT AFFECTED BY CREDIT CRUNCH
The superstars of Biggin Hill flew into Bromley on Tuesday night, eager to close the gap on Dulwich. Recent weeks have seen Biggin Hill call on all their big guns in attempt to put the frighteners on Dulwich.
Bromley CC had a revival over the xmas period which saw them rise up to 4th in the league, after at one stage looking like they could go down. However extensive partying over the weekend in Edinburgh meant the Bromley boys were on the back foot right from the start.
Martin vs. Lee (World # 87)
Martin was absent from Edinburgh so had no excuses about all night drinking to use in an attempt to explain his slow start in this match. Lee took everything early and played consistent squash whilst Martin was scurrying all over the place, looking somewhat off the pace in the first.
Towards the end of the 2nd game Martin began to force Lee into a few mistakes and worked hard to earn his points. The 3rd followed in similar vain, but Lee always looked like he had plenty in reserve as he closed out a convincing 3-0 win. Well what did you expect? He is world ranked and on win bonuses. - (Sorry if I’m repeating the same old jokes, I have only just moved out of my fish bowl – or was it my caves – oh I can’t remember – I think it’s because I’ve been diagnosed with amnesia if I remember correctly!)
Sam vs. Ian (World # 88)
Ian was keen to get on and off first as he had to shoot off early, or so we were told, in fact he just wanted to start drinking as soon as possible. Sam, having spent the weekend heavily drinking and not sleeping much (what with the amount of girls coming in and out of his and James’ hotel room) was off the pace in the first. And, like the rest of the squad discovered that all that drink was not good for fitness. He succumbed in the 2nd and 3rd, and Ian ran out a convincing 3-0 winner.
James vs. Phil (World # 89)
I missed most of this game, but James, despite playing so well in Scotland where he and Lewis were unlucky to lose in the semi-finals against the Scottish #3 & #4, could never get into this match. Phil was too straight and consistent with his squash. James probably drank more over that weekend than Phil has drunk in his lifetime.
Lewis vs. Toby
Again I missed most of this game, but did hear plenty of expletives and racquet throwing from the court. As the score line suggests, and as my teammates informed me, Toby made too many errors and Lewis punished him for it. Lewis was the only one of us who didn’t look like the alcohol had affected his game. Must be his new South African flame that has put him on cloud 9.
El Capitano vs. Gordon
Gordon was intent on seeking revenge for his early season defeat to El Capitano, however he started the first with a string of errors, whilst El Capitano capitalised and was finding his range with his volleys and drives. Then at 8-5 up, the wheels came of the band wagon and El Capitanos’ fitness deserted him. From then on in, Gordon used his experience to pepper the front of the court with tight backhand drops, whilst El Capitano crumpled in a heap.
A resounding 4-1 win for Biggin Hill.
Into the bar, and the majority of Biggin Hill had left early – (no not to catch a plane, come on jokes are funny once, but not every week – get some new material!) – so the conversation mainly revolved around Edinburgh, and also selling those amazing wristbands to Gordon, with Martin doing is best to convince him that they were no good!
The Bromley boys face Bexley next week – let’s just hope that they have recovered from Edinburgh by then, otherwise they will be dragged into a relegation dogfight.
P.S Did I mention that we went to Edinburgh?
