Report:BEXLEY EXTEND BROMLEY CC WINLESS RUN TO 3 MATCHES

An away tie at local rivals Bexley was made all the more difficult with the absence of Martin Rintoul who was off skiing for the week. After scratching around for a fifth player, first from the 2nd team – where objections were strongly met, and then from the 3rd team where someone’s’ wife put their foot down, it was left to able deputy Neil Atkins to step in at the last minute.

Duaine Harrison vs. James McMeckan (No.2)

Having had a successful weekend in the Kent closed where he beat close friend Mr Woo Woo (aka Malcolm Parker for my less learned friends) and narrowly lost to the calm mannered Issa Kamara, James expected to run Duaine close.
Duaine was eager to get on quickly as he had spent all day driving 300miles. Apparently he had to collect something from Rodmersham and had asked James for directions – DOH!
James started slowly and Duaine took advantage of this with consistent lengths and some great forehand drops. After dropping the first, James looked to King Lewy for some guidance – ‘you can win this 3-1’ – yeah and?
The second followed in similar vain, with Duaine racing into an early lead, towards the end of the 2nd though James began to start playing some of the squash he played at the weekend, it wasn’t enough though and Duaine went 2-0 up – cue some advice from El Capitano, ‘pepper him with some boasts and keep it away from his forehand’
The 3rd was a much tighter affair with James fighting back from 8-4 down to get back to 8-8. Duaine was tiring, and his 3-2 loss to Neil Baker at the weekend (after being 2-0 up) looked to be playing on his mind. However after many nail biting rallies, Duaine prevailed and gave Bexley their first win of the night.

Ben Vs Sam (No.1)

Both players had justification for more excuses than Tom Woods, what with Ben recently giving birth – (well he did his bit 9 months ago), and Sam unfortunately being made redundant only last week. However from what I saw of the first, and from what I was told from others, Sam played brilliantly, really pushing Ben in the first. Bens’ class began to show in the 2nd and 3rd though and he ran out a 3-0 winner.

Matt Badger vs. El Capitano (No.3)

‘Mentally unstable, a pushover, all brawn and no brain’ – just some of the derisory comments made by El Capitano’s team-mates in recent weeks.
But after the weekend (no not Edinburgh) where he was runner up in the Kent plate, (winning £20 worth of M&S vouchers – the missus will be pleased) El Capitano was a different proposition all together.
El Capitano took advantage of Matts’ slow start in the first, (he was obviously still thinking about how to make Gravy) and forced a few too many errors to win the first comfortably. Into the second, and obviously surprised by actually leading, El Capitano took his foot off the gas, and Matt raced into an 8-2 lead. El Capitano stormed back though, with both players hitting hard cross courts and deft volleys. The exertion to get back to 8-7 took its toll though and Matt levelled the match.
The 3rd and 4th games were nip and tuck all the way, with both players pushing for all their worth. A few missed opportunities here and there for El Capitano and some clinical winners at the end saw Matt edge out a close thriller in just over an hour.

Alan Vs Neil (No.5)

Drafted in at the last minute, Neil proved an able deputy at No.5. El Capitano missed this entire match, so sorry to say I can’t comment on it, except that Neil won 3-0 – rubbish I know.

Matt G vs. King Lewy (No.3)

Only saw the early stages of this match, but did witness a hilarious fall from King Lewy. Scrapping for a tight drive, King Lewy was sent sprawling by Matts’ leg; he literally skidded from one side of the court into the side wall. Definitely an 8 for execution. I didn’t want to laugh, but James had already cracked up so that set me off too. I would liken it to a dwarf being used as a football by a giant. (As that is something you do quite often see!)
Despite the fall, King Lewy prevailed again for his third win of 2009 – the only player to have won each of his matches this New Year.

Into the bar and it was left for the remainder of the Bromley boys to discuss the dilemma that Sam has got into at work, whilst also sampling Matt B’s culinary skills – which I might add were exemplary – complimented with a nice side portion of Garlic Bread – which has become the standard at Bexley.
On the journey back to Eltham, James said that he was actually beginning to warm to Matt Badger again, despite their differences, that was until he brought out the anorexic gravy, which drowned the vegetables and chicken pie.

Bromley CC squash club would like to say a special thank you to Ian Wright R.I.P for all the hard work and time he devoted to squash and racquet ball in Kent.
