Report: | Probably worth a few words this week since it was a competitive match. PL1 visited Tundridge Wells in their ongoing quest to acquire points. It didn't look too healthy with Martin missing for the visitors and Tim drafted in at the top of the order for the hosts, but anyway, things got underway.
First on Ward v Pratt.
Didn't see any of this due to being on court next door, but my informants tell me that it seems as though the Whirlwind is back (just in time to miss the next tree matches as usual). Steve apparently produced his usual brand of unique squash. Dead nicks, frame nicks, skid boasts down the middle, you name it. It seemed to do the trick however as he overcame Andy 3-1 to get points on the board early.
Next door Payne v London snr.
This started off like a dream - NOT. Colin relinquished but a few hand-ins in the 1st. So far so bad. This as Colin later put it, lulled in him into a false sense of security. As Colin's boredom level seemed to increase, the author clawed his way back into the match. Periodically Colin would step it up and win a few points, but the pattern continued until the author got 7-3 up in the 5th. At this point Colin obviously decided to ease down on the throttle, and did enough to take the game and thence the match. Honours even.
Next up McLeod v Boatright.
This was a very tight 3-0 loss for Matt. Having barely stepped onto a court in weeks, Matt looked to be doing ok, but found himself unable to sneak either of the first two closely contested games losing 10-9 in each. The 3rd was more straightforward for Paul who eased through to take a 3-0 win.
Next door - Richards v Robbins.
JEJ had the dodgy ankle suitably strapped up for this one, but following on from last week seemed to be moving better. This coupled with the usual array of tight shots (notably several ultra tight winning volley boasts) was enough to overcome Tim. It was, nevertheless a good game to watch with both players turning on the quality and deception. Three tight games to JEJ.
Last up in the decider of the evening Head v Harris.
Dave looks to be making some strides back to his former level over the last couple of weeks and so it continued last night. Having been exhorted by the PL coaching staff to play a simple pressure game using his power and cut out the fiddly stuff, Dave managed to do this for about 80% of the time. Sadly for him, he found Jolyon on sparkling form, covering the court with alacrity and burying every opportunity with relish. The scores don't really do justice to the match but a few too many cheap points and mistakes in the 1st and 3rd did for Dave's chances. Still, moving in the right direction.
Bolstered by this performance Dave tucked in to a bowl of pasta, happy in the knowledge that a large bowl of chilli would await him on his return home. When it was pointed out that this probably wasn't the smartest way to tackle the "fat b*stard" accusations he constantly aimed at himself on court, he announced that he didn't anticipate living until his sixties, shunning the chance of the artificial heart that Steve assured him would be available in 35 years time. The joys of youth ... |
