Report: | Ho ho ho. A relieved PL welcomed the arrival of the cavalry from uni yesterday, as they found themselves able to partake of some early Christmas cheer against a slightly depleted Bexley team.
First up - Culver v Green.
With Matt on standby for the imminent arrival of Green junior, he was keen to get on first. I'm sure this suited Simon who got fairly used to arriving first and going on last during the summer. It was business as usual really for WB. Matt played pretty well, contesting each game, but WB had a bit too much in every department and took a relatively comfortable 3-0 victory to get the show on the road.
Next door - Thompson v Knight.
Elliot had been drafted in as a replacement for Duane who has injured himself. Whilst this is a pretty onerous responsibility, gave a very good account of himself, pushing Martin all the way. After taking the 1st, Martin looked to be taking over the match when going 6-1 up in the 2nd but Elliot battled his way back to have games balls at 9-8, only narrowly failing to take the game. The momentum continued in the 3rd with Elliot racing through it to get back into the match. Sadly for him (and no doubt to a not very happy Martin's relief), Elliot lost his way a bit in the 4th, letting a couple of (pretty innocuous) marking decisions get to him and proceeded to hand Martin the match. Nevertheless, a good performance and one to watch for the future.
London jnr v Steeden.
Didn't see any of this as I was (a) marking and then (b) on court during the course of the match. Judging from the scores and from comments made by the protagonists afterwards, this was a fairly unspectacular match with Steve pretty much in control of things. In any event, Steve wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 win to secure the match.
Next door - London snr v Badger.
An interesting match this one. The author actually managed to play reasonably well for a change, and Slack will no doubt be cursing himself for making too many mistakes when he had time to play his shots. He was certainly cursing the marker (and opponent!) for what he considered dodgy decisions (and/or calls). I think this is a case for technology as action replays would have proved very instructive - but there you go. 3-0 to the author.
Last on - Robbins v Ford.
With Ben hot-footing it through the night from a match in the depths of Middlesex and James there from early on in the mistaken expectation of catching up with old mate Marc Gumbrell (no he was in Bexley's 2nd team, and the long layoff doesn't seem to have prevented him giving his opponent the treatment as of old), it looked like a long evening for the PL no.1. No big surprises here really. A very amicable meander around the court with both players producing nice touches, but Ben being in control throughout, saw Bexley register some points on the board.
All in all, a very satisfactory evening for PL. Two wins on the spin and all's well with the world. Back to reality with a bump when the aforementioned cavalry ride off into the sunset after Christmas, but until then ... |
