Report: | BCC gain first win of season at expense of local rivals Bexley!
A welcome return to familiar faces this week, with BCC facing a Bexley team, bolstered by their new signing Ben Ford. BCC were pleased to see no Duaine Harrison this week, meaning the match was likely to come down to results in the middle order.
I’ll go straight into the squash this week, only because nothing exciting preceded this encounter. Both teams knew who they were playing, and everyone knew where the courts, bar and changing rooms were. Oh wait a minute, following last weeks unfair ribbing of Diddums, he asked me at the weekend to stop taking the mickey out of him as it’s not fair, and he tried really hard last week, despite a neck injury.
James Vs Matt (No.4)
The previous encounter between these two bitter rivals saw Matt gain an unlikely win. James, despite still feeling the effects of his recent ‘Man Flu’ was in no mood to wilt this time round.
The first started as all others have between these two, with James pushing Matt (literally) around the court, and Matt doing his best to retrieve everything. With a dominant display on his backhand, James built an early 7-2 lead. A few shoving matches and ball throwing moments later, Matt had clawed his way back into the game, and managed to nick it 9-8, leaving James wondering why the world was against him.
Into the 2nd, James heeded El Capitanos’advice and began to slow it down (I think) taking the game comfortably.
The 3rd and 4th games were close affairs, but James’ sheer determination saw him prevail and give BCC their first win of the night. James ran off home in an attempt to rectify his illness. Matt meanwhile, sat at the dinner table, wondering whether he had done something wrong to put James in such a bad mood. (The shoving and cup kicking may have had something to do with it)
Diddums Vs Matt (No.3)
After last weeks unfair ribbing of Diddums, which saw him leave Biggin Hill choking on his own tears, it was only fair that the editor missed this match. That way nothing nasty could be written about him, after all he does seem rather sensitive at the moment. The odd time I peered over the balcony, Diddums was playing is usual consistent brand of squash forcing Matt into errors with his tight lengths. If an error did creep in, Diddums took it out on his leg, leaving a nasty red scar. (Surprised he didn’t retire injured with that one – he must be manning up – all this ribbing of him may be doing some good). Sam held on to win in 4, (this time) putting last weeks defeat to bed, and giving BCC a 2-0 match lead.
El Capitano Vs Steph (No.5)
Buzzing after last week’s performance, expectations were high going into this one. Steph soon wiped out any optimism El Capitano had with a dominant assured performance. Steph mixed it up with slow boasts and deft drops, forcing him to scurry around the court like a headless chicken. She was way too clever (she did used to be world #4) for El Capitanos’ liking and ended up closing the match out in about 20mins – not even enough time to get his hair messy. 3rd team hardman Steve Pusey did attempt some words of encouragement for El Capitano – praising him for his sheer effort, just wish I had a squash brain, was a bit quicker, and didn’t have a neck injury.
Lewis Vs Mark (No.2)
For the second week running, the editor missed Lewis’ match as was on marking duties. (My match had finished before they had even finished their warm-up) The last match between these two was an epic 5 setter; another epic was on the cards.
The match scores will have to tell the rest, as I can’t think of anything witty to make up about this match – (plus a hot bird has come and sat next to me at work – I think it’s a blue-tit, they normally come out around November time) all I know is that on match point, Lewis played a shot that ricocheted off the back door – WOW! – And I’m getting paid for this! (Biggin Hill kindly offered to pay me for my reports – just as long as I didn’t rib them for their underhand tactics) Who cares about the report, it gave BCC the win!
Martin Vs Ben Ford (No.1)
Having already provided 2nd team coaching beforehand, marked and coached James, Martin just had to sell a few more racquets and promote his website to all and sundry. Playing Ben would be a walk in the park compared to that!
Having lost 3-2 in the fifth (that’s for you James) against Stacey at the weekend, Ben looked sluggish at the beginning. Martin was second guessing Ben, out dropping him, and generally annoying him. Like last week, Martin earned a valuable point for the team, winning the first. Ben began to find his form after that, and despite a close 3rd that could have gone either way won 3-1.
Sam kindly offered some friendly advice to Martin (although not directly to his face) – ‘He can give me some coaching, I can help him lose his pot belly’ Now come on Sam, Martin is just as sensitive as you, and we all now how you reacted when the mickey was taken out of you!
Afterwards we all had showers, had a drink and sat down and had a nice meal with pleasant conversation – (now why do my counterparts write things like that – in all honesty who cares that you shared a nice conversation over dinner – just talk about the squash – that’s all we are interested in!)
With James leaving early, Lewis and El Capitano were stranded in the heavy snowfall. The b*tch who beat me kindly offered us a lift, however Ben said he knew a shortcut, we got home an hour later – cheers Ben!
