Report: | The usual round of casting around for a team preceded last nights visit by T.Wells. With a large chunk of the team's nucleus missing, PL were reduced to four players. So, nothing new there then and on with the match.
First up Robbins v Payne.
Didn't see a huge amount of this one. Colin was heard bemoaning the fact that he always loses 3-2 to James and next time he'd save himself the effort of bothering with the first four games and just play the 5th. Well, it was business as usual with James fully living up to the JEJ moniker and easing through to take the match.
Out (again!) on the graveyard court, London v Head.
Normal service between these two is a hard five setter. Not this time. The author was in la-la land for 2.9 games, with Jolyon belying his recent injury with some good attacking squash. The author eventually woke up at 7-2 down in the 3rd, but despite coming back to 7-7 promptly fell back into narcolepsy mode for the last two points. Some training in order methinks.
Back in civilisation, Harris v Ward.
The team captain's pre-match assessment of this one was that Dave would be struggling after a two week break. Whilst I didn't see a single point of the match, this analysis seems to have been wildly inaccurate, and my spies tell me that Dave was looking pretty sharp and more mobile than of late. Hopefully a return to his previous level is on the cards. A good 3-1 win for PL here then.
Last on out in the sticks, Bonner v DeWet.
Andy, having stood in at the last moment once again, had (unbeknown to him) got the whole match riding on his game. Things didn't get off to a particularly auspicious start with Herman taking the 1st comfortably. The 2nd saw a change of tack, and Andy despite being a long way short of his mobility of old, started to drill in a few good low kills on either side. A big lead then, but at this point the nerves set in and Herman clawed his way back to sneak the game 9-8.
Onto the 3rd and an action replay of the 2nd. This time Andy went 8-2 up playing some good stuff. Tightness set in again, with many opportunities to take the game squandered. Herman once again chipped away eventually running out 10-8 winner to take the match.
So all done and dusted. Not such a bad result for PL considering the paucity of reserves. Next week should hopefully see a return to availability for some of the missing, and the hitherto dormant PL recruiting machinery has reportedly got the one player not yet signed to BH in its sights. I'll believe it if I see it, but never say never ... |
