Report: | Having been dobbed in it by El Cap who is apparently far too busy in the catacombs of Credit Crunch PLC to be bothered with such fripperies as a match report (or filling in the scores), herewith the saga of last night's proceedings.
First up - Stabler v London snr.
The author decided early on that the knock-up hadn't gone on long enough. Accordingly the first two games were used to extend this a bit further. After recovering from this bout of narcolepsy, the author managed to lure Sam into tinning a few more shots, narrowly (though it shouldn't have been) sneaking the 3rd thanks in no small part to an intended boast that turned into a screaming straight drive winner. The author from his contorted position at the back thought it had tinned, Sam thought it was a double bounce at the back. A slightly perplexed El Cap on marking duties eventually decided that it was neither, much to Sam's disgust. This was followed by a winning drop to take the game.
Sadly, normal service was resumed in the 4th with Sam cutting back the mistakes to take a hard fought game and the match.
Next door - Rintoul v Robbins.
Having discovered between games that JEJ was well on his way to revenge after the first half defeat, the author was somewhat surprised to see the eventual result. Coming upstairs to see JEJ polish off the match 9-6 in what he thought was the 3rd, it transpired that Martin had in fact blitzed the 3rd and 4th to make it a close run thing. The bit I saw was characterised nicely by the cross court rolling nick at match ball down from Martin. Trademark stuff.
Next on - McMeckan snr v Pratt.
The Whirlwind was back in harness again on shift rotation, but your intrepid reporter wasn't back from the shower for long enough to see more than the last few points. El Cap having obviously recovered from another gruelling earlier battle with The Debt Collector, had plenty enough in the tank to see off WW. Another racket disintegrated against the wall according to my spies, as WW let the frustration get to him (shades of he who shall not be named again maybe - no, not Voldemort). A puce WW appeared in the gallery very shortly after completion of the match, and having stumped the 3 match subs arrears, disappeared off into the raging tempest outside. LIFO as usual (for those with an IT background).
Next door - McMeckan jnr v Thompson.
(Very) ex-student removed the cloth cap for long enough to put in an impressive appearance on court. The resident PL professional had spotted the clutching of what looked like a dodgy back, but ex-student didn't appear to be hampered by it too much. The mobility wasn't tested too much due to Martin burying a fair few short ones in the tin. After some tips from the PL coaching staff, Martin abandoned the drops, using his attacking boast instead to get his opponent to the front. Unfortunately, some good play was leavened with a continuous sprinkling of errors. Ex-student calmly continued to hit lengths and kills to wrap up the match.
Last on - Ryall v Harris.
Didn't see the 1st which King Lewy seems to have taken with some ease, but Dave was probably just unwinding his dodgy back. The 2nd was a different affair. Dave larruped the ball around exerting considerable pressure on Lewy who was sent scampering to all four corners at a fair old clip. Having been thus mauled, the author was unsurprised to see Lewy who had done all the running looking as fresh as a daisy outside the court, whilst Dave was barely able to breathe. From here on in, despite some good racket skills from Dave and a few mistakes from Lewy, it was one way traffic. Dave looked more and more shattered and his desperate attempts to finish the rallies early, more often than not resulted in the ball rattling the tin.
So this wrapped up proceedings awarding BCC a comprehensive win, but PL extracted a crumb or two of comfort by registering a few points on the scoreboard. The usual good natured banter in the bar with the BCC boys rounded things off. On to the crunch match next week for PL and the last knockings of a hard season. |
