Report

Report:Having pitched up at Amida to see pretty much the strongest (realistically) side they could muster facing us, PL1 escaped from this fixture with honour intact. With the first half match up now being a distant and best forgotten memory, things got underway.

First up - Aldridge v Thompson.
After his heroics in the first fixture, Martin was sadly unable to reproduce the feat here. Despite the ribbing he took (in his absence) in the bar afterwards about his skin tight but extra large shirt, Marc put on his usual impressive performance, and although Martin battled away gamely, he seemed unable to extract many points for his efforts. 3-0 to Marc.

Next door - Wilde v Robbins.
JEJ looked totally rejuvenated for this match. The moving forward still wasn't really going to happen, but plenty of deception and accuracy set the tone for this one. Jamie fired in his customary brand of low boasts, powerful overheads and cross court nicks, but in the end, despite a mini comeback to win the 3rd, was unable to match JEJ. A good performance and points on the board. 3-1 to JEJ.

Next on - Martin v Burnett.
A bit of advanced planning had lined Fergus up to stand in for the first team, and he put on a very creditable performance in this one. Alex had spent the pre-match time telling anyone who would listen how much weight he'd put on and how poorly his squash was going, but having heard it all before, the PL coaching staff was unimpressed. Sure enough, after a slightly rusty start with Fergus dominating the 1st, Alex got into his stride and had a bit too much all round for Fergus easing through the next three games to win 3-1.

Next door - Olby v London snr.
The author was suitably thrilled to discover he had a rematch against Guy. All in all it was business as usual between these two. The author trying to break his best ever target of ten points in a match (and failing once again), but in truth playing reasonably well. Guy was his usual generous self (think skins and rice puddings etc). After collecting his second racket in the face in ten days, the author was left feeling that maybe another sport would be safer. 3-0 to guy.

Final match - Webb v Harris.
Tony had bagged the only team shirt that seemed to fit, which was probably just as well, as extra large would have drowned him. Why is it that all squash team shirts seem to come in extra large (with just one large one thrown in)? I suppose having listened to the training regimes pursued by the Amida (read Purley) team and friends, maybe it's not such a surprise. Anyway, Dave got off to a flying start winning the first, but this was never going to be a contest to see whose fitness lasted the best, and sure enough the Duracell bunny triumphed 3-1 as Dave started to make more mistakes, wrapping up a 4-1 win for Amida.

Lots of the "club team" members were to be seen flitting about throughout the course of the evening, but they are all apparently "on the comeback trail" and therefore unable to play. Bring 'em back quick please ...
