Report: | With the Div3 season closing to a tight finish both teams were looking to take the points to secure safety.
5. First up was Mike against Andy at five. Andy got off to a good start and never really looked back. Keeping the tempo up he forced Mike into a few errors and took advantage when Mike couldn't find his length. Mike responded we in the second taking a lead before a few unforced errors allowed Andy back in and he pushed on in the third.
3. Paul kindly turned up early to allow Fergus to get on, get off and get home to his 10 day old son (Thanks Paul and well done Ferg!) and hence save his bacon with his good lady. Didn't see much of this one but it appear Paul was a little too strong on the night although Fergus managed to nick a point for PL3.
2. Kevin and Matt then went on with the scores at 2-0 to the visitors. Kevin started well and went into a commanding 8-0 lead in the first before a combination of Matt's gritty play and some McCaughan-based nonsense squash allowed Matt to come back to take the first game. There were to be no similar errors for the rest of the match as Kevin took the next three - all in similar fashion with the scores close until about 4-4, 5-5 when a predictably knackered Kevin started to run out of steam and go for his shots... which managed to stay up. 2-1 to Parklangley
4. The smart money (ie not mine) said that the first game would be important in the match between Gerald and Simon at four. I didn't see much of this apart from with the scores at 7-7 in the first Gerald pulling two perfect drives, deep and tight, out of the bag to take the first. Gerald, who has been in good nick for most of the season, then didn't look like losing the next too and as hard as Simon tried he was unable to pull the game around. 2-2.
1. It was all down to the number 1s to take the match. This compelling game deserved to go the 5 (although I'm glad it didn't as the bar was calling me), some excellent shot making and outstanding court coverage, with both players picking up shots they had no right getting to and returning them well. The first was a very even game with alot of positional play and tatics very much evident as both players sort to work the other out, Zeb managed to pick up the crucial points from 7 to 9 to take the first. The second was again matched all the way with Zeb's managing to stretch Lee just enough to allow him to attack and pick up the second. Lee was 7-4 up in the third and looked set the take the match to a fourth game, when something sparked in Zeb who upped the tempo and with some excellent hard, straight hitting found some good shots at the most perfect moment to push through to turn the game from 7-4 down to a 9-7 victory, and with it the match went to PL3
Very enjoyable evening with the usual good company from the Beckenham lot. Cheers |
