Report

Report:Another close match in a league that has no clear favourite yet. Having beaten Park Langley 3rds last week the feat was repeated against their 2nds by the same score.

First on was Harsum versus Beevers. Harsum had avoided the wine and three course dinner this time around and the result was a clinical first game and the match soon followed. Classical squash but the victor's long reach allied to low and hard driving proving to be unassailable notwithstanding his opponent's technical elegance.

So, Dulwich 1-0 up and Knox on court against Bonner. Knox quickly moved into his gameplan and into a 2-0 lead. Bonner, however, is not a man to be taken lightly (ex-Dulwich, says it all). He fought back with admirable courage chasing the diagonal and winning the third game. Thats eemed to take it's toll and Knox took the fourth to put Dulwich 2-0 up.

Optimism is not a bad thing, but needs to be tempered with quiet confidence and execution. The smart money would have been on Grinnell to take the match against the elder statesman, Grant. But Grant Snr had other ideas and out thought his younger, fitter and faster opponent. Well done to him, at last taking a leaf out of young Adrian's book (Adrian Grant, Trev's son who is world ranked top 20 player and recently beat Gregory Gaultier in the World Open). 2-1 to Dulwich soon became 2-2. When I say soon I mean it quite literally. The 4th rubber was a mismatch between Bennett and Dogra. Bennet is a class above most of the combatants in this league at numbers 3, 4 and 5. I suspect he would even challenge at 1 and 2 once he gets some practice in having been out for a year. A technically gifted player to whom we all wish the best of luck and hope that he is promoted to the 1st team when the rematch takes place, so that we dont have to face him.

That brought us to the finale, Ruff versus Grey. Much the same as the previous week against their 3rds the last match being the crucial one. Ruff took it 3-1 in a hard hitting game against a tricky opponent who would not stop running. Match to Dulwich, Knox provided the food and that always deserves a mention. Harsum did the washing up. Well done to all.
