Report: | Lucky Ken's boys fluked through again in this inter-club showdown. Yes Ken you can be lucky over and over and over again in a row :)
Starting off with the 5s, didn't see much of this due to dieing on the other court (where or where is that New Year training regime i promised myself). The odd point I did see appeared to be evenly contested with Adam accelerating towards the end of the match.
Kev on the other hand was running along nicely until hitting "the wall" at 7-0 (or something) up in the first (IN THE FIRST!!!! lordy). Managing to scrape that one and then somehow winning 5 or 6 quick points at the start of the second put him in a good position. Andy battled back but Kev steadied the ship at 8-8 to take the second. Andy took advantage of Kevin in the third who could neither breathe nor see nor move and won a tight 4th by being a bit more clinical towards the end. Towards the end of a fourth some nonsense about putting a hand up but then playing on and demanding a let upon losing a rally unleashed such fury in Kevin that fatigue vanished and with Zeb's previously forgotten advice (cheers!) now remembered and reverberating in his small and feeble brain, Kevin took the 5th to 1.
Gerald vs Darren at 3 promised to be one of the key matches with both teams feeling confident that their man could do the job. The evening's result could have been very different had Gerald managed to nick the game points he had in both the 1st and 3rd but Darren is well known as a fighter and when down he managed to tighten up his lengths and keep Gerald's chances to a minimum to reel him back in. Before taking the 4th with some room to spare. A high quality game however and both players can leave with the heads held high. I suspect this will be a match Gerald will be eyeing in the future as an opportunity to get some revenge.
With PL3 2-1 down and the usual Cotton ringer in at number one going 7-0 up against Zeb things looked dead and buried for Parklangley's best looking and most lady-pleasing team. Zeb's efforts at aiming for hard and low kills every shot enabled Mike to step forward and hit an lovely array of tight winners to advance to 1-0 with some comfort. This contined into the 2nd until Zeb impressively changed the tide of the match with a change of tatics, playing to his strengths and finding a good length. Zeb was a little loose in the 3rd however and Mike again exhibited an impressive range of winners drawing much appreciation from the crowd. The atmosphere crescendo'ed in the fourth as some of the bar decamped to watch the squash. A close start to this game had the scores at 5-4 to Mike until Zeb found a new gear and played a sucession of quality lengths and then tight short balls, winning 5 points in a row to take the 4th. The 5th was set up to be a classic, although at the start it was clear Zeb was going to continue his impressive end-of-game-4 form. Rushing through the points he took a commanding lead and at 8-0 up gave a look to the gallery which said "i better not bugger this up!". One serve later and Zeb took the match with both players leaving to a much deservered round of applause.
With the match at 2-2 Trev and Simon were going to decide the match. With the first tight game going to Trev, PL2 started looking nervous and stressed. Simon however was not to let this pressure get to him. He took a commanding lead in the 2nd and although Trev began to come back managed to take the crucial second to restore parity. At this point a long lost friend of the McCaughan clan pounced upon Kevin and prevented him from seeing the climatic finale. Simon though appeared to have taken the 3rd with some ease - but then Trevor, never one to lie down, battled back in the closely contested 4th almost taking the match to the wire. Simon though won points at the rights times and took the 2nd team over the line.
Another enjoyable evening's squash. One day Cotton.... one day!
