Report

Report:Parklangley's best-looking and most lady-pleasing team recorded a much need victory in what must surely be one of the closest matches that will be played this season.

The order of player arrival meant that the 1s and 2s went on first.

1. Playing at the time prevented me from viewing this match but from what I could gleam between the game breaks Zeb had started dominantly with Tom struggling to find his touch. After going 2 up things changed with Tom winning the third fairly swiftly and the 4th followed. Fair play to Zeb who, after being 2up, could have struggled in the 5th but he turned it on for the win.

2. History has not recorded a match between Kimpton and McCaughan that has not resulted in a 5 setter. So this was no surprise. What was more surprising was the players' utter contempt for playing consistent, tight squash. Richard went 8-2 up in the first, only for Kevin to come back to take it 10-8. Kevin then went 8-2 up in the second only for him to join in the clownery and lose 10-9. A similar scenario developed in the third, with a 7-3up Richard being beaten 9-7. Richard won the fourth quite easily after Kevin went 4-0 up. The game break brought passing looks of "you b@stard for doing this to me" between the gladiators. The cerebral McCaughan however had spotted how the games were going so in a fit of genius decided to go 7-3 down in the last when, quite expectedly, he came back to win 9-7. A rather epic battled with the last rally played out with both players effectively unconscious.

4. An extensive match recovery period resulted in your scribe missing the start of Graham vs Trevor, although both players have often had good encounters in the past. The last time they played Trev went 2up, then lost the next 2 before winning the 5th. Surely after winning the first to 5 and the second to 3, this time he wouldn't falter again. Graham however is not one to back down and as I entered the gallery the sight of the PL3 team grimaced faces told me what I needed to know. 2up had been pulled back to 2-2. The final game was a cagey event with both players opting for length rather than attempting winners. Trev won through though as Graham made a few unforced errors towards the end of the game, resulting in the nights third 3-2 and the match going to Parklangley.

5. Your scribe missed much of this match (recovery time again...) although 2 10-8s to Mike put him in a good position and ready to push on to 3-0. Keeley evidently fought back to claim the 3rd with a bit of room to spare. Arriving in time to see (and to have the score sheet thrust upon me) the fourth Keeley appeared to be in control, keeping the ball deep and taking advantage of any width Mike afforded her. Not being aware of any prior marker/player disputes in this game your scribe was somewhat taken aback when a routine let call was greeted with howls of derision and some type of banshee screeching in the viewing gallery (hello again Alan!). With abuse-induced teary eyes the marker managed to peer down upon the court to view Mike battling on in the 5th but too many short and wide shots enabled Keeley to take control and with it the final game 9-1.

3. With the 3s going on court and starting at some ridiculous hour much of this game was spent with viewers gazing longingly towards the bar door, praying for a quick 3-0. Richard and Fergus were going to make us wait however. Fergus' high-tempo, aggressive game paid dividends in the first but Richard resolutely battled back in the second. The game swung back Fergus' way in the third, however Richard was able to push on in the 4 and 5, the scores do not quite tell the full story as there were some very good, close, tight squash played - although Richard was a little stronger and deservedly took the match.

A very close night which could easily have swung the other way. Thanks to Graham for his enjoyable chat at the end, Richard J eventually appearing from the BCC catacombs, it was a shame that the rest of the home team had to leave, but it allowed our travelling support to grab a bite of the very tasty food available. It also enabled Zeb to indulge in a minimum of 4 helpings before moving on to dessert.

Thanks for the game BCC, hopefully see you soon.
