Report: | "Bromley CC Thrash A Depleted Fitness Exchange"
Fitness Exchange have struggled all season to put out a regular team, and in fact from their 7 games, have had to concede 2 of them.
Bromley CC got the call at 17.00hrs, Fitness Exchange only had 3 players. This was somewhat of a relief for the Bromley CC captain.
At the weekend all of his players had been involved in club competitions. In total they had played 22 matches between them in the space of 3 days. Ian was suffering from his customary football injury and Andy having played more squash in one weekend than he has all season was extremely stiff.
Lewis then called the BCC captain at 18.45hrs, to inform him that he had over done it at his Xmas work do and had been sick all day. (What a Lightweight)
The Student Vs Grant (Number 3)
The Student had suffered a tough defeat at the weekend in the club QF, and was keen to bounce straight back with a win. Having realised that his girls' socks always caused his feet to bleed, he had invested in a fetching pair of black tights. This stopped the flow of blood, but couldn't stem the tide of winners in the opening game, which he won comfortably 9 - 0. The 2nd and 3rd games went the same way. Grant would scurry around and pick up a lot of balls, but when The Student got his chance he would put away with deft accuracy. A combination of clean backhand winners from The Student and some erratic errors from Grant handed The Student his 2 nd league win on the trot. - Only dropping 4 points in the process.
Ian Vs Trevor (Number 1)
Bromley had already won the match but Trevor wasn't going to let that stop him from giving 110%. In the opening game, Trevor looked sluggish, but Ian was bang on form and took it easily 9 - 1. Ian raced into an early lead in the 2nd going 7 - 2 up. Sensing that Ian was starting to relax, Trevor managed to claw his way back into the game winning the next 5 points and winning the game 9 - 7. By now Trevor had warmed up and was focused has ever, but Ian wasn't going to lie down. Ian kept running around forcing Trevor to play that extra shot. A closely fought game went Ians' way 9 - 6. In the fourth however, Trevor went 6 - 0 up with some good play around the front of the court. Ian managed to stay alive and force the game to 8 - 8. Then at 9 - 9 on match point, Ian had an easy forehand kill. Unfortunately it wasn't tight enough and Trevor played an excellent shot to gain back the initiative. Ruing his missed opportunity Ian contrived to lose the next point. 2 - 2.
The fifth game was a ragged affair, both players clearly tiring. Trevor was getting slightly annoyed with the marking, disagreeing with lets when he thought they should be strokes. Trevor would wait for the ball to come to him, and then not hit it forcing his opponent to run onto the ball. A new rule according to 'Squash Monthly' is that if a player can hit the ball but decides not to and draws the opponent into him, then it his no let for the attacking player. Unaware of this Ian conceded on match point to Trevor, when exactly the same thing happened. Game to Trevor 9 - 7 and 3 - 2.
Michel Vs Simon (Number 2)
'The Dutch Destroyer' took on Simon in the last match of the evening.
Michel had his racquet newly strung, and he was back on form straight from the off. He had too much for Simon, taking the ball really early on the volley, and forcing Simon deep onto his backhand where he was struggling all night. He won the 1st 9 -0 and the 2nd 9 - 3.
In the 3rd Simon questioned a lot of calls from the marker, both players were getting in each others way. To be fair to the marker (Andy B) all of his calls were correct. The delaying tactics of Simon didn't work and Michel easily won the 3rd 9 - 2.
Michel who was wearing the worst squash T - shirt ever, (a horrible red Zimbabwe ensemble) hurried through his match in only 20mins, obviously aware that the fashion police who were on their way.
Bromley CC won the match 4 - 1 and took 19 points in the process. An early Xmas present. They have a bye next week, which is good as all of the players will be on the razzle. They have consolidated their position in the league, and can now look forward to the cup competitions (Cornwallis and A Plate) in the new year.
As for Fitness Exchange, they have serious problems. There's no team or team spirit, with only Simon staying for food. The manager needs to turn things around, otherwise they are doomed to relegation.
