Report

Report: Not much up for grabs except pride and revenge for the first half disappointment for KP. OEs a virtual shoe-in for promotion before tonight - and the same tantalisingly just out of realistic reach for Knole.

However, there was a five match winning streak going for the hosts and a worrying losing habit to shake off for the visitors.

Occasional team player Chris S-B (one of 3 Chris's on parade) went off like a train against veteran Keith. The first game was gone before Chris realised he had an opponent. So Keith's sudden appearance on the court took Chris (2) unawares for the next game and a half. Keith belied his age with some clever slow-balling and quick retrieval. And it took some tireless retrieving by Chris to claw back the momentum - not quite enough of it to take the third. However, with Keith's stamina finally worn down by the Knole dervish, Chris proved the stronger over the full 5. Knole had made a good start.

On the other court, meanwhile, Chris (3) had shown steady driving skill and consistency to take a close two game lead over Paul. A whitewash looked on the cards until Chris hit the wall and Paul gratefully accepted his surrender of the next three games.

We haven't seen Andy for a while, although he has been showing some good form in the league. But Mark's form has picked up sporadically and it was hoped that his famous cut shot would give him the edge over the youthful lefty. Unfortunately, 'bad' Mark was on display and Andy's touch and ranginess always had the last (polite) word.

With Jerry S having been swept off court by Dave at their last encounter, KK's ambitions were hanging on a knife edge - and probably much worse than that. Jerry had other ideas and showed what losing a couple of pounds of Christmas surplus can do. Dave won the knock up easily, but allowed a few errors in the first game to hand the initiative to Jerry. Dave dug in late in the second, but by then Jerry had the bit between his teeth and the upset was sealed.

With Chris (1) undefeated this season and Jerry T reminding himself of their first meeting (3-0 to Chris), the result looked to be in the bag for Knole. Jerry had a good go in the second and showed glimpses of some elusive form. But Chris powered through with some trademark entertainment. He will be a sad loss to the Priory when he returns his native to South Africa later this year.

Knole move up the table. Third place beckons.
