Report

Report:A cracking match - with an unexpected outcome. Knole fielded their strongest side this season and hoped for a good result. However, the wins did not come, as anticipated, from 4th & 5th strings.

Mike made an unusually fast start against Peter and looked to be well in control - until Peter found more consistency and touch - in the end, he cruised home in 5. On the other court, Mark could not find the middle of the bat for much of his match. From 0-2 down, he seemd to be finding some form as he fired his usual quota of winners in the 3rd and 4th games. Then the tin came up to meet him again. 2-0 to Sundridge and the KP crowd started to drift away - resigned to another gut-wrenching loss.

Chris S-B - making his first appearance of the year after a period of domestic and work chores - was expected to win (he runs forever). Andrew stayed with him for a couple of games, but - with only one good leg to turn on - never looked like coping with the Knole Dervish.

Still, Jerry wasn't likely to win - overweight and suffering from a poorly back. But somehow he seems to have found his old line and willpower. Perhaps it was the thrill of being no. 2 again. Or perhaps Richard didn't realise how much he was struggling for form.

Either way, 2-2. And the battle of the Saffas was only ever going one way. Mr Sayer has been too busy with his property development, city banking duties and golfing exploits to play much. He is, however, a class above and could afford to cruise against a less mobile opponent, who never got into a comfortable rhythm.

On this form, Knole could climb. But it's more likely they will be back to struggling to raise a side again after Christmas.
