Report

Report:As one star rises, another falls. KP's run continues. FF's banana skins multiply.

Last week, Syd handed them one, in the form of two ineligible players. (So, you were sleeping at the AGM, Syd;-)). It couldn't happen again, could it?

Chris Morgan showed no signs of last week's gout as he pushed Dave Johnson hard for two games. Then Dave found reserves of speed and touch to claw back the third with some unbelievable winners. Chris composed himself again, only to hit the tin from nowhere several times in the fourth and hand Dave another lifeline. Only a timely wobble by the marker at 7-all gave Chris the chance to sneak home.

Mike was being given the run around by Kevin, who looked to be playing out of position for a man of his skill and experience. (Little did we know that he was - ed).

So, 1-1, and time for the famous Knole injury curse to strike. Last time, Mark had pulled up lame; this time, he was showing no signs of his achilles problem, as he cruised through the first two games. Then, just as we feared a return of his tin disease, Graham had a ham pull. Perhaps if he had known he was really fifth string, he wouldn't have pushed himself so hard.

Captain Andy would need all of his lefty force to level the tie. But the pressure of plaing catch up was too much for him against a steady, delicate Jerry, who took just enough pace off the ball to frustrate Andy into self-destruction.

What should have been the eagerly awaited decider then, turned into an exhibition match between the two best players in the Division (legal ones, that is). The 1st strings provided a feast of gritty, fast, skilful squash, with so many twists and turns even the crowd found it hard to breathe. In the end, squash was the winner - with the match decided on the last ball of the last game.

[Only later would the accountants take most of FF's points away. Let's hope they can sort out the bookkeeping for next week!]
