| Report: | The match last night was a real cliff hanger, played in a good spirit. Cannons started the evening 8 points clear of Sydenham, but with the withdrawal of our number 1 – called into service for the first team – it was by no means certain we would stay above them.
Darren and Steve were first on against Kevin and Dan. Steve went ahead in the first game but was clawed back by Dan who was playing well and eventually won it 9-7. But then Steve focused well and won the next three close and high quality games. You won't see many better quality games than this at 5.
Darren quickly won the first two games 9-3, 9-2, looking too much for Kevin, but then Kevin cut out the mistakes and Darren hit a wall, losing the third on a tie breaker and then the fourth and the fifth by bigger margins.
Rob and John went on against John and Richard, who played well and were too strong and frankly too able bodied for John and Rob.
That meant Sydenham had won the match, but not that they had enough points to finish above Cannons. Alan went on against Ben and quickly lost the first game 9-2, so it was starting to look bad for Cannons. However, Alan won the second and third games, at which point the assembled masses worked out that if Alan could close it out 3-1, the two teams would end equal on points and Cannons would finish above Sydenham by dint of having won more matches. It was a very close game, but eventually, having saved a game point, Alan won it 10-8.
A thoroughly good evening, played in a good spirit. Thanks to Sydenham. |
