Biggin Hill Win 4 In A Row At Nemesis Bromley CC

Biggin Hill won their 4th match in a row away at Bromley CC last night, recording their first victory over Bromley in 3 attempts this season.

The first two matches on were Dutch Prodigy Vs Ray (at 3) and The Student Vs Simon (at 5).
Earlier on in the season in a Cornwallis match (which Bromley won 3 - 2), these two rubbers were split with Ray and The Student both winning 3 - 2.

Captains Mark and Ian knew that these two matches were pivotal to the outcome of the match.

The Student Vs Simon

After a lengthy lay off The Student has started to perform much better for the team. Going into the game he felt confident that he could record his 3rd win in a row, especially after he had spent a lot of the xmas period training.

On the other hand Simon was looking to improve his 2 & 4 record, and gain revenge for his narrow cup defeat. Simon began the first game brilliantly. He was hitting it hard and low,
and The Student was struggling to cope. Even when The Student moved his opponent around, Simon was like a whippet picking up everything. Simon won the 1st 9 - 4.

By now though The Student had warmed up, and he raced through the next two games dropping only 5 points. Simon sensing another defeat began to
look despondent and The Student took an early lead in the fourth. Simon began to regain his composure, and started to find the form that had seen him take the first so comfortably, he reeled in The Student and forced a 5th game by winning the 4th 9 - 6.
The fifth game was a nerve jangling affair. Both players had put so much effort into the first 4 games, that errors began to creep in. The Student raced into a 6 - 0 lead, and then missed an easy crosscourt (much to the despair of Ian). Simon fought back to within 2, but The Student pulled away again into an 8 - 4 lead.
Ian and Mark were straining for every point upstairs, it meant so much to the captains.
Having took command, The Student began to fall apart with a series of unforced errors, and Simon magnificently clawed his way back to 8 - 8.
However The Student held on to win a highly entertaining match 10 - 8.

This match had everything, but what I would like to say is that it was high quality squash for No. 5, especially so close after xmas. Simon has improved no end after his 1st match of the season, and his speed round the court keeps him in so many rallies. The Student is improving week in week out, his backhand is unstoppable (when it goes up) and if he keeps playing regularly I see no reason why he
can't be pushing for a top 3 position.

Only 4 other matches to write about. I haven't had anything to do over xmas, so I'm making up for lost time.

Dutch Prodigy Vs Ray

This was another high quality game. Dutch Prodigy had been practising over xmas with his brothers and it showed as he clawed back Rays' early lead and took the first 9 - 6. The rallies were long and hard, with neither player going for winners, exchanges round the front were followed by long rallies at the back.
Neither player was tiring. Dutch Prodigy began the 2nd in commanding fashion, and took a 5 - 0 lead. Ray has lost only once this season, and his sheer will to win, saw him claw back the lead and take the 2nd 9 - 6. Unfortunately The Editor didn't see the 3rd game as he was having kittens watching The Student, throw away lead after lead. Ray won that one after
another closely fought game 9 - 6. Unfortunately he did see the fourth.
Dutch Prodigy looked tired in the 4th (I later found out he was ill... he's always ill.... must be his girlfriends cooking), and Ray won it 9 - 0.
I really felt Dutch Prodigy would get the better of Ray this time, but Ray is a tough nut, and just seems to play better and better each week.
The saying 'Gets better with Age' springs to mind. At least Dutch Prodigy's' Zimbabwe shirt was better than his last one.

The matches were square at 1 - 1. On went Sacrificial Lamb (Dad) at 4 Vs John Lane, whilst old foes King Lewy and Gordon battled it out at 1

Dad Vs John Lane

Dad was put at 4, in a tactical plan by Captain Ian. He knew he would be up against it against John, he needed to slow Johns' game down and force him to use his brain.
John didn't need to use it in the first as he won it comfortably 9 - 1, cracking the ball all over the court. It normally takes Dad a game to get warmed up, and he certainly warmed to
the task in the second. He had John on the ropes with some good retrieving, and taking the pace out of the game. John looked tired, but
he'd built enough of a lead at the start of the game to hold on 9 - 5.
You felt that if Dad had won that game, he may have prolonged the match.
John easily ran away with the 3rd winning it 9 - 1.

Dad is playing better than he was at the end of December, he looks like he's shaken off his illness, and hopefully in the weeks to come he can pick up some invaluable points for Bromley CC, despite being sacrificed each week at 4.

As for John he started the season at 2 and has now dropped down to 4, where he looks more comfortable. His 4th match of the season now means he will be present on the Stats leader board. If he stays at 4, he will surely
move up it.

King Lewy vs Gordon.

Editor missed this game as he was on court.

King Lewy and Gordon seem to play each other 2 or 3 times a season, and the matches are always close going to 5 games. Unfortunately for Gordon he can never beat King Lewy. Last night was the closest he has ever come.
King Lewy took a 2 - 1 lead, but Gordon hung on in the fourth winning it 9 - 7. In the Fifth it looked like Gordon was going to get the monkey off his back as he took a commanding lead. King Lewy hung in there, and after
a dodgy call from the marker, managed to level it at 8 - 8. Gordon bravely set 1, but King Lewy won the next point to take the game 9 - 8, and beat Gordon again.
Gordon rarely lets his emotions show on court, but he was heard to be F......Ing and Blinding, cursing his misfortune against King Lewy.
In the changing rooms afterwards he was heard to say 'That bloody Lewis, he always beats me' (or words to that effect)

Although the match was level at 2 - 2, the Captains Ian & Mark had already finished their game, prior to the finish of King Lewy and Gordon, so you can't really class it as the decider. (If it was the decider, I'm the sure
the result would have been different)

Ian Vs Mark

Unbeaten Mark took on Ian at 2, looking to extend Ians' impressive losing streak to 5 games.
Mark went 8 - 0 up in the 1st with some impressive play around the front of the court, sending Ian all over the place. Ian was warmed up now and managed to extend the game a bit longer than Mark had hoped. Mark made a
series of unforced errors, but took the game 9 - 3.
Ian again started poorly, and soon found himself 8 - 4 down. However Mark began to make some schoolboy errors, and coupled with a change in tactics, Ian got back to 8 - 8. He then had 9 - 8 game ball, but was too defensive on game point. Mark rallied and held on to win 10 - 9.
Ian has a fragile mind and a bad temper at the best of times. Still smarting over his mistake of playing defensively on game point, he
contrived to throw away the 3rd without much of a battle. His tactics went out the window, and he made 6 unforced errors, and Mark played 4/5 winners from the front of the court.
Marks' superior game handed Biggin Hill the win 3 - 2

Just a quick note to say 'Great effort with the website Mark'. It's creating a buzz around the league, and everyone looks forward to wednesday
morning when they can check the Match results and stats.
