Report: | This opening match of the summer season produced a battle in which neither team deserved to lose and should have ended in a draw if draws were possible in squash. Olly Ruff beat Billy McManus, who must be the hardest player to read in this league, 9-7 in the fifth game of their match and the final rubber to clinch the fixture. At one point Ruff was 0-2 and 0-5 down against a frustratingly tricky opponent. Even those spectating and the marker were unanimous in praising the Sundridge Park man on his shots and unclear as to where next he would put the ball. I suspect that Olly probably does not know how he contrived a win other than running his socks off and retrieving absolutely everything, making his
opponent play extra shots to win rallies and force errors. McManus would not embarrass himself if he had to play higher up the order than at number 3 where he usually resides.
Sundridge Park have always been excellent competitors and the equivalent winter fixture was a similar close fought match with Dulwich winning narrowly 3-2 as in the present match. In this summer fixture, new boy Martin Winnick kicked off proceedings with a hard hitting and impressive 3-1 win over Justin Jardine. Then Dulwich lost at number 1, Shapiro going 1-3 down to Tullett and Dogra at no 4 going 2-3 down to Andy Redfern. Both matches seemed to go to the fitter men. This I suspect is a product of the Dulwich boys playing to the world squash rules for the last two months - PAR to 11 thereby playing shorter matches and physically not being conditioned to the old fashioned slog to 9. Kent for some reason have decided to part company with World Squash and devolve back to the old scoring system.
At that point it seemed Dulwich would lose 1-4. Winning had other ideas and hit his way back into form with a 3-2 victory over Olly Porritt whose work rate was extraordinary. And of course Olly Ruff then decided the tie in Dulwich' favour.
Onwards and upwards.
